2 Nutrition  Basically a good, healthy diet with 500 extra calories  Space out the calories  5 “mini meals” daily

3 Healthy choices  Limit processed foods and artificial sweeteners  “Brown” foods are better than “white” foods  High protein snacks  Drink to thirst

4 Are restrictions necessary?  No dietary restrictions, unless a history of food allergies  Most common are milk products, wheat and eggs  It takes 4-6 hours from ingestion of foods to affect the baby, some foods take 24 hours  Signs of fussiness, gas  Watery, green stools

5 Chalk board Fast Fact Contrary to popular belief, there are no foods that a breastfeeding mother must eat or must avoid. In fact, maternal diet can influence the color and taste of breastmilk. A varied maternal diet may better prepare an infant for beginning solid foods because of these subtle flavor changes. Iowa Lactation Task Force

10 Weight loss surgery  Gastric Bypass Surgery is one of the fastest growing sub-surgical fields in the U.S.  84% of 103,000 surgeries performed in 2003 were on women of childbearing age  30% of gastric bypass pts develop nutritional deficiencies Roux-en-Y

11 Breastfeeding after surgery  Nutritional status during pregnancy plays a key role  Ensure adequate calories to maintain milk production  Appropriate vitamin & mineral supplementation as directed by her HCP  Recent lab work to rule out Vitamin B12 or folate deficiency?

12 What about post-pregnancy weight loss?  BF women lose an average of 5 - 6 lbs more the first year than non-nursing women  Breastfeeding alone does not insure weight- loss

13 Guidelines for weight loss  After breastfeeding is well established  No more than 1 pound per week wt loss  Combine diet and exercise  Nurse on demand  Eat at least 2000 calories  Maintain adequate fluid intake

14 Exercise  Wait until after first post partum checkup with OB  Supportive bra  Milk composition and lactic acid

16 What is your best response? I’d sort of like to breastfeed, but I am such a snacker. Love my fries. And chocolate! I’ll bet my milk wouldn’t be good enough. Yes, we both love our burgers and fries. Especially on days when we are busy, we just grab some fast food.
