UNESCO Institute for Statistics 3 o Founded in 1999 in Paris, France o Relocated to Montreal, Canada in 2001 o Located on the campus of Université de Montréal o Has grown from 8 to 110 employees o Mandated to maintain international databases for: Education Science and technology Culture Communication and Information

UNESCO Institute for Statistics International education data, what for? o Internationally comparable data… o Allows to compare education systems Share knowledge about good practices Offer external view on national systems o Allows countries to monitor and benchmark their progress towards development goals (EFA and MDG) at international level Inform the international community of neglected areas o Advocacy in order to mobilise support and resources o Developing, informing and amending appropriate policies, ensuring decisions are evidence-based

UNESCO Institute for Statistics How to ensure international comparability? o Data comparability across countries is ensured by: Adopting ISCED: International Standard Classification of Education Using United Nations Population Division (UNPD) population estimates Using World Bank and IMF economic data

UNESCO Institute for Statistics The importance of timely data o To meet the international demand for data and their respective deadlines o To influence policy changes within the country o Country level statistics may not be shown if deadlines are missed o UIS’ own outputs rely on the availability of reliable timely data o Last but not least, timely data allows for feedback which ensures that the data are of the best possible quality
