What is Jing? Jing is a free (but not open source) screencasting software owned by the TechSmith Corporation. Jing is for quick and easy visual communication – to simply capture and share what you see. It was designed to be a streamlined and efficient screen capture and recording application. Jing is compatible with Macintosh and Windows. McKiernan
3
How does Jing work? The software takes a picture or video of the user's computer screen and uploads it to the Web, FTP, computer or clipboard. A URL is automatically created and can be shared with others to view or access the uploaded file. McKiernan
4
How can Jing be useful in a library setting? Its simple format and the ability to quickly upload screencasts has made Jing useful for virtual reference and tutorials in libraries. Jing offers free technical support. McKiernan
5
Jing vs. Jing Pro Jing is free. Jing Pro is the premium version, which offers more flexibility and customization options. With Jing Pro you can record webcam video, deliver HD quality video for the web, remove Jing branding from your newly recorded content, and share your screencasts on popular online video sites like YouTube - $14.95/year Both Jing and Jing Pro include a complimentary Screencast.com account with 2GB of storage and 2GB of monthly bandwidth. McKiernan
6
Screencast.com Screencast.com is TechSmith’s content hosting site that Jing uses to securely host your screen captures and screen recordings. Every Jing user is given 2GB of free space and 2GB of free monthly bandwidth on Screencast.com. McKiernan

For people looking for longer screen recording and editing functionality, Snagit or Camtasia Studio, two full-featured screen capture, screen recording, editing and production software applications, are an option. Snagit- $49.95 Camtasia Studio- $299 McKiernan

When you do Jing places a hyperlink on your clipboard. Simply paste (CTRL-V or Command-V) the link into an IM chat, email, forum post, Twitter, etc. and when the person clicks it they will see your uploaded screenshot. McKiernan

Point to things with your mouse, scroll, flip through photos, click around in a website or application. If your computer has a microphone, Jing can record your commentary at the same time. McKiernan

Sharing your Jing Screencast When you're done recording, your screencast is ready to upload. The moment it's on Screencast.com you have a link ready to paste and share.
