3. Creating a Helpdesk Where None Exists PCCC has found that one of the best uses for lecture capture software is not to record class sessions but to create supplemental videos. This presentation looks at ways to address the growing need for technology training through the use of lecture capture software to create short training videos on specific topics.

About the Writing Initiative  5 Year, Dept of Education Title V Grant to improve writing  Build college-level writing center  Design 20 writing intensive GenEd courses across disciplines (40 course sections)  Incorporate writing, critical thinking & information literacy  Develop and provide online resources for technology and writing  Use ePortfolios  2007-2012

What is Lecture Capture?  Allows instructors to record classes and make them available to others digitally.  Can be very simple to very sophisticated  iPod/iPad recording of a class  Screen capture software with audio  Classroom setup including microphones and cameras to film the class and software that ties into presentation computer  Specialized setup in a dedicated studio

Simple Capture Software Benefits  iPad-Style Recordings  Portable  Cheap  Instant access to video  Screen Capture  Cheap or free  Jing is free.  $50 for Snagit  Can be annotated  Good for short demonstrations  Can be shared easily Drawbacks  iPad-Style Recordings  Must own separate software to edit.  Gives one view only  Screen Capture  Shows only what is on your screen  Not good for in-class capture  Free versions have time limits for video length

More Sophisticated Capture Software Benefits  Store recordings in a database  Can be accessed by anyone with an account  Share with colleagues without publishing video online  Easily embedded anywhere  Easy to edit  Excellent quality  Has Closed Captioning ability Drawbacks  Expensive  Recording capability not portable—can be used only in designated rooms  Editing limited by what the product includes  Usually just cutting of sections  Not able to be annotated  Video not available immediately
