3  Using the pictures on pages 50-51, answer the following questions:  How are the women in green helping the others that they don’t know?  Are the students in red helping others?  What are the people in the large photo doing?  Why should we care about people we don’t know?

7  DAY 2:  Open to page 50-51 and go over Question of the Week and Amazing Words  Bell Ringer : Talk about the following questions with a partner.  In what ways does a MAYOR show concern for people in his or her community?  Discuss times when you or your family BENEFITED from another’s BOUNTY.  How do you interpret the phrase, “being a good NEIGHBOR”.

9  Participation  Diversification  Discuss these words and provide examples of each as a group.

10  Symbolism : A character, object, or idea, that not only has a meaning in itself but also suggests or stands for something else.  The AMERICAN FLAG is a symbol of what?  Story Structure : Character  People that are part of the story. They have a specific role in the story.  Read “Saving the Past”  Lets look for an example of Symbolism in “Saving the Past”. Look for characters, objects, or ideas that stand for or symbolize something else?

11  Today, we will be reading pages 56-63 from the main selection of Mother Fletcher’s Gift.

12  Day 3:  Open to page 63 and go over Question of the Week and Amazing Words. BELL RINGER  Officer O’Brien’s PARTICIPATION allow Mother Fletcher to get to the hospital.  How has your PARTICIPATION in an event helped others?  Officer O’Brien may have been uncomfortable with people of different races because he came from a community with little cultural DIVERSIFICATION.  What does the word DIVERSIFICATION mean in your own words?

15  Today, we will be reading pages 64-71 from the main selection of Mother Fletcher’s Gift.  HOMEWORK: Think Critically page 73 # 5 in student text book on loose leaf paper.

16  Comprehension Check: (If time as a whole group)  Realistic Fiction: In what way do the illustrations add to your understanding of “ Mother Fletcher’s Gift” ?  Theme: : On what you have read so far, what do you think is the “Big Idea” of “ Mother Fletcher’s Gift” is ?  Inferring: How do you predict O’Brien’s relationship with Mother Fletcher might interfere with his holding fast to the motto Eight and Straight ?  Greek and Latin Roots : Look for Greek and Latin roots for the word ambulance ? You can use a dictionary for help.  Connect Text to Self : If you met Mother Fletcher, would you like to develop a friendship with her? What qualities does she posses that you admire.
