So that there was no opposition to Mao – he was in charge. Any one against Communism was labelled “counter-revolutionary” All GMD supporters were converted or killed e.g.65,000 killed in Guangzhou 28,000 killed in Shanghai Churches were shut and religion banned – WHY? Mao wanted to be the only God people worshipped so that anti Communist ideas could not be spread
