7.3 BALANCING EVERYDAY EQUATIONS BY: DANIELLE RASH, JUSTIN SHAZAR AND ERIC REYES-MUNOZ
3
WHAT IS AN EVERYDAY EQUATION? Everyday equations show qualitative and quantitative relationships between reactants and products. Everyday equations show qualitative and quantitative relationships between reactants and products. A qualitative relationship shows the type of reactants used in the equations. A qualitative relationship shows the type of reactants used in the equations. A quantitative relationship shows the number of each reactant used. A quantitative relationship shows the number of each reactant used. Let’s put this into simpler terms. Let’s put this into simpler terms.

WRITING A BALANCED EQUATION Reactants on right, products on the left. Reactants on right, products on the left. Ex. Frame + wheel + handlebar + pedal Bicycle (Reactants) (Product) Ex. Frame + wheel + handlebar + pedal Bicycle (Reactants) (Product) Convert words to letters. Ex. F+W+H+P FWHP Convert words to letters. Ex. F+W+H+P FWHP If more than one of anything, put a coefficient in front of letter reactants, and subscripts after letter products. If more than one of anything, put a coefficient in front of letter reactants, and subscripts after letter products. Ex. F + 2W + H+ 2P FW₂HP₂ Ex. F + 2W + H+ 2P FW₂HP₂ Let’s show pictures for you visual learners. Let’s show pictures for you visual learners.
