www.kcl.ac.uk/advice Can I work? Check your visa Should be allowed to work with restrictions If visa says “no work” or 10 hours rather than 20, see a Student Adviser as could be an error Cannot work if it says “no work”

Degree level: should be allowed to work for 20 hours a week in term time and full time in the vacation Below degree level: 10 hours a week in term time and full time in the vacation After the end of your studies (end date on your CAS): full time for up to 4 months or until visa expires, whichever is sooner Summer NOT vacation for Masters students (as you are writing your dissertation)

www.kcl.ac.uk/advice What Work Can I Do? Most things, but Cannot be self-employed Cannot work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer Cannot take up a permanent, full time position

www.kcl.ac.uk/advice Tax and National Insurance Must obtain a National Insurance Number – everyone pays national insurance Free, but takes several weeks Can start work without this, but must have applied for it Tax: everyone pays this, but can claim back if you do not earn over your personal allowance (currently around £9000 a year) See website for more information: www.kcl.ac.uk/advicewww.kcl.ac.uk/advice

After your studies Various options including: Doctorate Extension Scheme (PhD students) Tier 2 (skilled jobs) Tier 5 (temporary jobs) Tier 4 visa for doctors/dentists in training or if continuing with studies Keep a look out for our workshops throughout the year
