1 JESUS CHRIST WAS EXALTED FOR ME
LESSON 6 JESUS CHRIST WAS EXALTED FOR ME Opening Prayer: Dear Savior, humiliation wasn’t the end for you! Today as we learn about your exaltation, help me see you ruling all things in this world and help me to look forward to the day of your return. Even though I don’t know when, I do know that my time to get to know you better and love you more will end, either on the last day of the world or on the last day of my life. Take away my fear of that day. Yes, I want to serve you as long as I live, but even more I want to live with you eternally. As I learn more about your forgiving love and care for me, draw me closer to you today – because all of your life in this world and in heaven is – FOR ME!! Amen. Sometimes when a ruler gets a lot of power, he uses his power for his own selfish ends—just to serve himself and make himself rich. He taxes his people far more than he needs too. Then he puts the money into a secret bank account so that when he loses his power, he will have a huge fortune to live on for the rest of his life. Why does he does this? Why would people want to get rid of him? We turn our attention to Jesus Christ—Son of David, Son of God, our Prophet, Priest, and King. Obviously Jesus Christ was not and is not like that ruler. When Jesus was exalted and as he takes up his heavenly power and glory again, he uses his great power FOR ME – FOR MY HAPPINESS! That’s why Jesus’ exaltation is such a meaningful lesson every day. We will examine the 5 steps of Jesus’ exaltation from the Bible to be assured that His work and the use of His power was successful. Click to next slide.

2 JESUS CHRIST WAS EXALTED FOR ME
EXALTATION = Being lifted up, referring to what happened to Jesus AFTER His death Ask your youth: “What does the word: “Exaltation” mean? Answer: It means to “be lifted up”, to raise high, to elevate. The term “exaltation” refers to all those things Jesus did following his death and burial. There are 5 specific activities cited in the Apostles Creed:

3 THE APOSTLES’ CREED The Second Article continues: “He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Parent and youth read this section of the Creed together. Click to next slide.

4 THE 5 STEPS OF JESUS’ EXALTATION:
Ask and explore with youth: “Do you know what are the five steps of Jesus’ exaltation?” Remember Jesus does this for me! Click to next slide.

5 The 5 Steps of Jesus’ Exaltation
5 Will come as Judge 4 God’s right hand 3 Ascended Have youth record these 5 steps. Note 3 of these 5 are past tense—these are factual events of Jesus’ life. The fourth is in the present tense – Jesus is doing this right now. The fifth is future – it is yet to come or to happen. Click to next slide. 2 Rose 1 Descended

6 This is a picture summary showing Jesus’ humiliation and his exaltation.
In the top portion Jesus laid aside his power and glory as King. In the bottom portion he takes up again his power and glory as God. Click to next slide.

7 STEP 1: JESUS DESCENDED INTO HELL
Let’s look more closely at Jesus’ first step. Click to next slide.

8 1 Peter 3:18-19 18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison Have youth read these verses slowly. See how clearly Peter expresses the Gospel. 1) Christ died for sins – our evil, our problems, our guilt was addressed by someone else – it called for death of the God-man, Jesus Christ. 2) once for all – remember Jesus’ words on the cross: “It is finished!” The Gospel announces “Done! Jesus paid in full!” The price was awesome— the death of Jesus for all sins of all people of the world. 3) the righteous for the unrighteous – this is the heart of our Christian Gospel. A substitution was needed. The Father leveled all the blame for all the world’s sin on Jesus and then had him executed in our place. Unbeliev- able! 4) to bring you to God – we cannot lift ourselves up to God. Christ has lifted us up to God. In the context of this powerful Gospel “He (Jesus) was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison(hell). This is the only place in the Bible where the “descent into hell” is taught. Jesus did not go to hell to suffer – that was done at the Cross and at the hands of His Father. The Descent into Hell is part of the Gospel celebration that Jesus is now alive and announces His victory over his enemy to the “spirits in prison” -- physical and demonic spirits—whose torment in hell had begun. Jesus is like a victorious general raising the flag of victory on home grounds of the enemy. He is not preaching the Gospel in hell to give people a second chance. Click to next slide.

9 Step One: Jesus Descended Into Hell
WHEN? After He died and became alive again. Have youth record note. Click to next slide.

10 Colossians 2:15 15And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. Parent read this Bible verse. Ask: Where is Jesus’ victory clearly seen? Answer: At the cross. There are other places where we get glimpses of Jesus’ victory. When Jesus began his public ministry the devil was right there with his temptations. Jesus went to the Scriptures. There were occasions when demonic or evil spirits challenged Jesus. Jesus withstood them or sent them packing. There was the darkness over Calvary when everything looked like gloom and doom for Jesus. Now there is a glorious triumph over Jesus’ enemies – sin, death, and hell. We take these words to mean Jesus’ descent into hell. Jesus publicly puts his enemies to shame by showing to them that “He is alive”. Death on the cross was God’s path to victory! Jesus who died is alive. What does this mean for us? We have an all-sufficient Savior who broke their power. Yes, sin, death, and hell are still our enemies. They don’t want to admit defeat but still have some power and are dangerous. That’s why we keep our eyes focused on Jesus and the Gospel. Click to next slide.

12 STEP 2: JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD

13 Matthew 28:1-10 The Resurrection 1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. 2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. 5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you." 8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." Have youth read Matthew’s Easter account of the Resurrection. Another earthquake – there had been an earthquake on Good Friday – God seems to want to get attention when He does mighty things. The appearance of the angel and message to the women: “Jesus has risen just as He said.” Take a look at his empty grave. Go and tell. On their way to his disciples Jesus appears to the women: “Greetings!” Jesus visibly appears to them and they worship him. Joy of joy – Jesus who was dead is alive! What does the fact that Jesus rose from the dead mean for us? We will explore that further. Click to next slide.

14 Romans 1:4 4and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Parent read this slide. Ask: What does Jesus’ resurrection mean for us according these words? Answer: This verse announces Jesus is the Son of God by showing His power over death—his being raised to life. Click to next slide.

15 Step Two: Jesus Rose From The Dead
This means: 1. He is true God Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

16 1 Corinthians 15:17 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Parent read this verse. If someone knocked on your door and told you he has a special deal—I have a $200 bicyle but I will sell it to you for $40 you might be skeptical and suspicious. Did he steal it? What kind of scam is he pushing? In the same way—if someone tells you that Jesus has won forgiveness for all your sins we might think: “How can I know for sure I’m forgiven? Can you give me any proof? Paul answers: “Christ has been raised! Click to the next slide.

17 Step Two: Jesus Rose From The Dead
This means: 1. He is true God 2. He really has defeated sin and death Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

18 John 14:19 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. Have youth read this verse. Jesus told his disciples that they would not be alone. He told them He would give them His Holy Spirit, but would also return to them in the flesh after he had left them. Jesus would appear to his disciples after his resurrection to show them he was alive. Then Jesus takes this truth farther. He says: “Because I live, you also will live.” Jesus’ living means our living. As death could not hold him so death cannot hold us who believe in Jesus in its grasp. Jesus’ death counts for our death and Jesus’ life counts for our life – yes, our eternal life. Click to next slide.

19 Step Two: Jesus Rose From The Dead
This means: 1. He is true God 2. He really has defeated sin and death Have youth record this note. 3. He will raise me and all the dead

20 Application Which is the most important church festival – Christmas or Easter?

21 Answer Both are key events. By his birth, Jesus became the God-man, whom he had to be in order to begin his saving work. By his resurrection, Jesus proved to us that He has completed our salvation. Which is more important – the beginning or the end? It would be impossible to choose one over the other. Both are absolutely necessary for our salvation. Click to next slide

22 STEP 3: JESUS VISIBLY ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN

23 Acts 1:1-11 Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven 1In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." Scan these opening verses from the 1st Chapter of Acts. The Evangelist Luke, who wrote the Gospel which bears his name and the Book of Acts reminds his reads that his gospel was a summary of Jesus’ life “until the day he(Jesus) was taken up to heaven.” Jesus provided many convincing proofs that he was live for a Period of forty days. Jesus continued to preach and teach about the Kingdom of God. The disciples were to wait in Jerusalem until the outpouring of God the Holy Spirit or Pentecost. Luke underscores in vs. 8: “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses….” These disciples personally witnessed Jesus’ ascension and they shared what they witnessed with their own eyes. “The Kingdom” – This is not a political kingdom as some of his disciples asked about – perhaps that’s one reason Jesus had a “cloud hid him from their sight”. Without a visible leader for the “Kingdom” who would show the way. No, the Kingdom of God is the Kingdom of Grace – that grace of God or his love that comes into our lives and where Jesus rules in our hearts – again, all based on His love for us and our youth. Jesus, having completed His work(redemption) – His assignment or mission from the Father-- ascended visibly and 2 angels “two men dressed in white” provided additional directions for the Disciples. Click to next slide.

24 John 14:2-3 2In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. Have youth read these verses. Jesus pictured heaven, the home he was returning to, as His Father’s house--a place with many rooms. Jesus ascended or was leaving his disciples in order to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house. Furthermore, he would come back and take them to the place He had prepared. Jesus ascended to heaven. The heaven to which Jesus ascended is not the realm of astronomers or astronaunts, the sky with its planets and stars. It is not a place where Jesus is confined or to which he has retired and can sit back in a comfortable chair with a fireplace. It is the state of glory in which Jesus who once came to earth to share our humanness now enjoys again all the power and glory as the Son of God. (See Ephesians 1:20-23) Imagine you as parents – father or mother – leave your home and share that you are getting a new place ready to live in – and you will be gone for 3 or 4 months. You promise that the new home will be beautiful and you won’t ever be gone again. Then you will be with your family everyday – watching over them and helping them to find true contentment and happiness. That might serve as a good parallel to explain what Jesus’ ascension means to us. Now Jesus is getting everything ready. Click to next slide.

25 Step Three: Jesus Visibly Ascended into Heaven
1. He assures me of a prepared heavenly home. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

26 1 Thessalonians 4:17-19 17After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage each other with these words. Parent read these verses. Paul explains to these Christians that Jesus will return—this will be the reverse of Christ’s ascension. Jesus first came to earth in a humble way – his return will be glorious. There will be believers who have died and there will believers living in this world. Believers who have died and believers who have been raised will come together to welcome Jesus as He returns. We “meet the Lord in the air” because the Bible gives us every indication that God will destroy our present evil world with fire. Thus, we have left this earth to be with Jesus. Nor do we have to be afraid to meet Jesus in this special way or ashamed. Those who have been raised and believers who welcome Jesus will meet Jesus as we do a long-awaited brother/sister. Jesus will provide us with a new body. I Corinthians 15:42-44 speaks of it as an imperishable and spiritual body. It will be without a sinful nature--all our imperfections and weaknesses—like that of Jesus himself. “We will be with the Lord forever.” Never again will we be separated from the Lord Jesus. Eternal joy and peace will be ours fully and forever. Talk about these things with one another. What a neat thing that we can sit down and discuss these Bible truths with our youth. We can share God’s wisdom from the Scriptures and understanding of things that has down to us through the corridors of time.

27 Step Three: Jesus Visibly Ascended into Heaven
1. He assures me of a prepared heavenly home. 2. We will live with Him there forever. Have youth record Note #2. Click to next slide.

28 Comment on the Following
Mary and Joanne are talking about the place Jesus is preparing for us. Mary says: “I sure would like to know more about what it’s going to be like.” Joanne says, “Oh, I don’t know. I think it’s enough just to know that Jesus is the one who’s preparing it, so I know it will be perfect for us.” Perhaps all of us, like Mary, would like to have all the details. It’s rather hard to know there will be a place but not to know much about it. Revelation 21 does give us a few ideas and assures us that it will be a fabulously beautiful place. But even though we don’t know a lot about it, we can be share Joanne’s confidence in Jesus. Click to next slide.

29 STEP 4: JESUS SITS AT GOD’S RIGHT HAND

30 1 John 2:1-2 1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Parent read these verses. A problem that early Christians faced and that Christians in the 21st century face is – dealing with sin in our day to day living. At home, at school, at work – sin ought not be a part of our lives but it is. Because we sin everyday how do we know that we truly are a member of God’s family. We have the best answer possible! Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, dealt with our sin problem at the cross. But there is more. The ascended Lord Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father much like a defense lawyer. The charges of our sin – at home, at school, at work – are leveled against us. Jesus speaks to the Father in our defense: “IT IS FINISHED!” I’ve paid for that sin with my perfect life and innocent death. Today Jesus continues to carry out His office (His job) as my High Priest, pleading my cause to the Father based on the sacrifice He made to take my sin away. Click to the next slide.

31 Step Four: Jesus Sits at God’s Right Hand
1. As my High Priest He intercedes for me. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

32 Matthew 28:19-20 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Youth and Parent read these familiar verses. We have studied the Good News of our Redemption (Lesson 5). How is this Good News that Jesus has won forgiveness for all people to get out. I suppose that Jesus—returning to heaven—could say: “I charge you, the angels of heaven—now that I’m home you go and spread the Good News that I’m Savior and Lord.” Instead, he chooses you, your family; me, my family; to continue in this mission. We have the authority of Jesus, the Son of the Living God, backing us up. Jesus transferred that authority to his disciples—to Christians down through the ages. Remember also that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God as Prophet – He’s the One who is with us and watching over us as we carry out this work in His name. Ask: What does this mean as we consider Good Shepherd’s Vision: “Grow in Christ….Go in Christ!”? Click to next slide.

33 Grow in Christ

34 Step Four: Jesus Sits at God’s Right Hand
1. As my High Priest He intercedes for me. 2. As my Prophet He guides me with His Word. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

35 Matthew 28:18 18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Have youth record this note. Ask: What special quality stands behind Jesus to see His work carry out? Answer: His authority as the Son of God over all things. Click to next slide.

36 Ephesians 1:20-23 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Scan these important verses. Jesus’ sitting at God’s right hand means He is ruling all things for the good of the church. Illustrate: When a three-or four-year-old child walks near the deep end of a swimming pool, that child’s mother watches very closely. The mother may turn the child away from the pool or take his hand until he is safely past the pool. Jesus deals with us in somewhat the same way. He makes sure that everything—the little things and the big things—all serve the good of us who believe in Him. So we can live every day knowing that he who rules all things is watching over us and guiding all that happens so that someday we will be with him in heaven. Click to next slide.

37 Step Four: Jesus Sits at God’s Right Hand
1. As my High Priest He intercedes for me. 2. As my Prophet He guides me with His Word. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide. 3. As my King He rules over all things and me.

38 STEP 5: JESUS WILL COME AGAIN
Exaltation – we have noted Jesus’ descent into hell, resurrection, and ascension as showing forth his glory as true God, Jesus’ sitting at the right hand of God as true God right now – and one grand or ultimate event to take place – His glorious return – and ALL FOR ME! Let’s look at this final event! Click to next slide.

39 Acts 1:11 11"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." Youth read this Bible verse. Ask: What did the angels say the ascended Christ will do? Answer: The Christ will come back or return in the same way he went to heaven. Jesus left in a glorious way and he will return in a glorious way. Click to next slide.

40 Acts 10:39-43 39"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, 40but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. 41He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen--by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Parent read these verses. Peter shares with his hearers truths that are familiar—the facts of Jesus’ ministry—a ministry as the Savior who came to seek and to save that which was lost. We are witnesses and we are to proclaim Jesus as the Savior. But there’s more to the Gospel…. Jesus who came as Savior will also come as Judge. The 2nd Article of the Creed captures it: “He will come again to judge the living and the dead.” Wow – Jesus’ name is revelation of all who He is and what He has done. It is the Gospel in a nutshell. Those who hear His name and believe in him have forgiveness of sins. That is true of Jew and Gentile alike, of “everyone who believes in him.” Yes, looking to Jesus we go from cross to glory! Click to next slide.

41 Step Five: Jesus Will Come Again
1. He will come as Judge of the living and the dead. (vs. Millennialism). Have youth record this note. Millennialism is a false teaching that Jesus’ kingdom will be on earth for a period of a thousand years and then the culmination of the ages. The major thoughts behind it already existed at Jesus’ time – that the Messiah would set up a kingdom in this world. Looking to Scripture we speak of the Kingdom of Grace – the rule of Jesus in our hearts giving way to the Kingdom of Glory with Jesus in heaven. Click to next slide.

42 Matthew 24:36 The Day and Hour Unknown 36"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Have youth read this Bible verse. Jesus’ disciples had questions about when He would return in glory—give us an exact time. This time of Jesus’ return is known only by the Father. Why? Human nature loves to procrastinate—we like to put off important issues and actions. God wants us to Know Jesus can and will come back at any hour,. Click to next slide.

43 2 Peter 3:10 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. Parent read this Bible verse. The Bible provides another picture telling us that “the day of the Lord” or Jesus’ return will be like a thief. AsK: At what time will a thief act or strike? Answer: when you least expect it. Click to the next slide.

44 Step Five: Jesus Will Come Again
1. He will come as Judge of the living and the dead. (vs. Millennialism). 2. No one knows when He will come. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide.

45 2 Peter 3:10-14 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. 11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. 14So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Have youth read these verses. Wow! “Everything in it will be laid bare.” The picture given here is that the heavens and the earth will be dismantled – taken apart. God who once created all things by power of His Word will now take it apart and destroy what He has made. “What kind of people ought we to be?” We want remember that we are covered by the blood of Christ’s Holiness. Just like the Israelites put the blood of the lamb on their doorposts as they prepared for the angel of death to pass over – so we are safe in the care of Jesus, our Good Shepherd. What kind of lives ought we to live? Peter is direct! “Make every effort to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with him.” Some people think of the Church as a place to hide until Jesus’ second coming. The church is a refuge to get away from the evil world and ungodly people. No, a far better picture for the Church as a place to be refreshed, to be equipped, and to be inspired in word and deed to live for the glory of God who created us and has the best awaiting us. Scripture encourages us to be ready for the best that is to come. Click to the next slide.

46 Step Five: Jesus Will Come Again
1. He will come as Judge of the living and the dead. (vs. Millennialism). 2. No one knows when He will come. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide. 3. We should be ready for His coming.

47 Acts 16:25-34 25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" 29The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family. Scan these verses when Paul & Silas are imprisoned in Philippi. This does not appear to be the time or place to do mission work. The disciples were praying and God answered their prayers. There was a tremendous earthquake. Pandamoniun broke out. The jailer sensing responsibility for escaped prisoners – sees the only way out by taking his own life. Paul and Silas call out to have him halt. The jailer looks again and see his prisoners are present. He asks the all-important question: “What must I do to be saved?” Paul and Silas direct the jailer to “Put your faith in Jesus!” Likewise as we look about ourselves in these last times we see the evil that is so prevalent. We can become depressed and feel there is no hope, no future. It is then that God’s Word directs us to “Put our faith in Jesus!” Likewise as God’s Spirit filled the jailer and his household with joy—God fills our hearts and lives with true joy As we focus on Him. Click to next slide.

48 Step Five: Jesus Will Come Again
1. He will come as Judge of the living and the dead. (vs. Millennialism). 2. No one knows when He will come. 3. We should be ready for His coming. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide. 4. We are ready when we trust in Jesus as our personal Savior.

49 Titus 2:13-14 13while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Parent read this verse. The “present age” in which we live we are to live godly lives of waiting. We have received God’s grace in Jesus Christ and we are moved to serve Him according to His will. We are looking forward to Jesus’ second coming in glory. Then all our hopes and dreams “in Christ” will be realized. Yes, we await the second coming of “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ!” What a glorious, joyous day awaits us. Click to next slide.

50 Step Five: Jesus Will Come Again
1. He will come as Judge of the living and the dead. (vs. Millennialism). 2. No one knows when He will come. 3. We should be ready for His coming. 4. We are ready when we trust in Jesus as our personal Savior. Have youth record this note. Click to next slide. 5. Until Jesus comes again we will gladly serve and obey Him.

51 2 Timothy 4:18 18The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Parent and youth read this verse together. Paul voices a strong confidence among difficulties in his life. We too can voice a similar confidence. Think of the petition of the Lord’s Prayer: “Deliver us from evil.” Luther explains that God would deliver us from every evil of body and soul, property and reputation, and grant us a blessed end…. The Lord will bring me safely home! To which we add: “Amen. Yes, it is so.” and ALL for ME!!
