3. “Taxation Without Representation”
The Sugar Act of 1764 imposed new duties on sugar and other trade goods.
The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first tax put directly on American colonists by the British.
British were in debt after the 7 Years’ War
Required that all colonial legal documents and printed materials bear a tax stamp provided by commissioned distributors who would collect the tax in exchange for the stamp
The Declaratory Act was passed in 1766 to reaffirm Britain’s authority to pass any colonial legislation it saw fit.
In 1767 the Townshend Acts were passed which taxed many other goods.
1774 – Intolerable Acts were passed as a response to the Boston Tea Party.

4. American Protest
Americans boycotted British goods in retaliation to the Stamp and Sugar Acts.
December 16, 1773, American colonists disguised as Native Americans boarded the ships of the East India Company in the Boston Harbor and threw crates of tea into the ocean. Known as the Boston Tea Party.
British retaliated with harder enforcement.
Americans wrote letters to British parliament announcing a boycott and they drafted a petition to King George III laying out their grievances.
Colonists would tar and feather British officials and customs workers
