1 Lesson Plan – Lesson 4 Circumference 2
Objectives and Habits of Mind To identify the radius, diameter and circumference of a circle (Level 3/ 4) To find a rough estimate for the circumference of a circle (Level 4/5) To find the circumference of a circle and the perimeter of a semi circle using Pi (Level 6) To work well in a group, listening attentively and taking on different roles when needed. To negotiate and follow ground rules, to ensure fairness and cooperation when working with others. To identify the best information to help complete a task and put it into my own words. Keywords Radius, Diameter, Circumference, Pi Mental and Oral Starter Using the mini white boards ask pupils the circumference questions to recap what they learnt last lesson. Main Activity Task One – Pupils to work in pairs to complete the missing measurements in the table. They then share their working out and answers with the other pair in the group. Task Two – In groups pupils work on the London Eye questions. Plenary Pupils to reflect on the success criteria.

Shape Space Measure I can accurately measure using a tape measure. I can roughly estimate the (circumference) of a circle. I can more accurately estimate the perimeter (circumference ) of a circle. I can calculate the radius, diameter or circumference of circles and semi circles when given one other measurement. I can calculate volumes and surface area of cylinders. 4 The Circumference is a bit more than 3 times bigger it is x bigger.
When we watched the dots move we realised that the circumference is not exactly 3 x bigger than the diameter. Once across twice across three times across and a bit further! The Circumference is a bit more than 3 times bigger it is x bigger.

11 Task Specific Roles Facilitator
Makes sure that the task is completed on time. Makes sure that all members of the group have a circle or semi circle to calculate the perimeter / circumference of. Resource Manager Can ask the teacher for help but only when all members of the group have been consulted. Makes sure that the group has all the necessary equipment. Learning Coordinator Makes sure that all members of the group know how to find a rough estimate for circumference of a circle. Recorder / Reporter Makes sure that all working out is recorded. Ask pupils to pick their wrist band before revealing the roles to them. 11

15 Task Two The London Eye is 135 metres tall. How far do you travel if the wheel turns once? You must show all your working out. The wheel turns 50 times a day. How far does it go in a year?

16 Maths Outcomes – Success Criteria
Level I identified the radius, diameter and circumference of circles. Level I know that the circumference of a circle is roughly 3 x bigger than the diameter and I used this to find a rough estimate for the circumference of a circle. Level 6 – 7 I found the circumference of circles and semi-circles using Pi (Level 6)
