10 Q:Who discovered Australia? A: The answer often given is Captain James Cook (1770); but there were other Europeans who visited before this: -Abel Tasman (1640s) - The Batavia shipwreck (1629) -Luis Vaz De Torres (1606)  But none of these people discovered Australia…

11 Q: For how long have Aboriginal people lived in Australia?  A: There is evidence that Aboriginal people have lived here for at least 40 000 years. Experts believe that people have lived here even longer than that.

12 Q.How many different language groups were there in Australia in 1788? A: there were more than 250 distinct language and cultural groups that were active in Australia at that time. Have a look at the map…

13 As you can see, there are hundreds of groups, each with their own languages and customs. It would not be accurate to think of all Aboriginal people being one group who all have the same experiences.

14  Q: What is ‘The Dreaming’?  A: The mythology of Australian Aboriginal peoples; stories transmitting ancient wisdom and ways of living.
