Outline Purpose Team Dynamics Team Background Writing Coding Languages Technical Design App Demonstration Syllamaster

The Assignment  Create a mobile application  Due at the end of the semester  Entire class divided into groups of 6-8  That’s it. Syllamaster

The Idea  Brainstorming took one week  Each group member wrote down their application ideas  Each idea addressed a problem that a student/person might face  Each member voted on which idea they liked the most Syllamaster

The Problem Students are very forgetful and not organized. Syllamaster

The Solution We wanted to help students earn better grades by keeping them more organized. Syllamaster

The Decision  Create a school scheduling application  Must offer more utility than current scheduling applications  Must be simple and easy to use  Must serve a purpose!  Will students actually use the application? Syllamaster

Focus Group  The group loved the idea, but would other students?  We decided to poll a very high number of students (152 to be exact) so we could get a really good idea of how they felt. Syllamaster

Focus Group Results  88% said that they would use the application  85% said that they would like a QR scanner for event entry  The results were very positive and encouraging Syllamaster

Focus Group Results We polled 152 current Kent State students 95% said it would be beneficial 88% would use a mobile app to track their course assignments

The Benefits Students  Never miss an assignment again with the help of Syllamaster’s notifications  Synchronization across all devices with Google access (PC’s, Android phones, tablets, etc.) Professors  Students will earn better grades  Provides an easy way to create a 21 st century syllabus Syllamaster

Team Dynamics Syllamaster Kelly McCourt – Leader of the Writing Group

Team Dynamics  8 Senior C.I.S. Students  Split into 2 groups  Coders  Writers  Allowed us to focus on the technical and writing aspects of the class Syllamaster

Risks  We never worked together as a group before  No mobile application development experience  First time working on one project that would take the entire semester to complete Syllamaster

Technical Documents Business Plan  Introduction document that served as a proposal to the project  Details our vision, goals, provides an outline of our application Functional Design  Features screenshots, application flow and the planned user interface  Details the functional design, user interface and focus group results Syllamaster

Technical Documents (cont.) Technical Design  Provides a step-by-step outline of how we created the application (from a technical, coding standpoint) Personal Papers  All group members were required to write about what they had learned during the semester Syllamaster

Team Background  Relevant Courses  Advanced Computer Programming  Web Programming  Project Management and Team Dynamics  Business and Professional Writing  How we chose our technologies  Android was more accessible  Java-based  Open-source  Previous Java experience  QR codes are a quicker way to enter data Syllamaster

Technical Design Syllamaster Gene Steratore – Leader of the Technical Group

Coding Preparation  Android is based on the following  Java  Primarily writing methods  Assigning values to variables  XML  Creates the User Interface Syllamaster

Remembering Our Goal Our goal is to help students earn better grades by not missing important assignments. Syllamaster Syllamaster App Icon

Application Overview Syllamaster simply lets students scan two QR codes (provided with a class’s syllabi) and have their course information and assignments be inserted into their calendars. Syllamaster Syllamaster App Icon

Where do the QR codes come from? Syllamaster

Features Create an entire syllabus online Simple, easy to complete forms QR codes are automatically generated Include all the usual information Course Information Assignment Due Dates Contact Information Plagiarism Statements And more! Syllamaster Instructor PC Application

Advantages Easy to use Everything is fast and quick Include all the usual information Course Information Assignment Due Dates Contact Information And more! Eventual Flashline integration Syllamaster Example Syllabus

Features Easy to access schedule Google Calendar Custom Notifications Multiple ways to enter data QR Scanning Manually Access to professor contact information Direct link to email Direct link to call Access to the developer’s contact information Direct link to email Developer bio’s Syllamaster Main Screen

QR Scanning Utilizes the Xzing Scanner Licensed under the Apache License Free Open-source Fully integrated inside the app 2 Main Types of Data Assignments Exams Homework Projects Courses Course Information Data Storage Written to an internal database for viewing inside the application itself Google Calendar Integration All scanned items are sent to user’s Google Calendar View scanned information in Google Calendar widgets, application, etc. Syllamaster Scanning an Event

Add Event Select a Type Class Exam Homework Project (Group) Project (Solo) Manual Date Entry Set custom start date and end date Semester Choose by semester (ie. Fall 13) Kent State’s start and end dates are pre- loaded up until 2014 Data Storage Written to an internal database for viewing inside the application itself Google Calendar Integration All created events are sent to user’s Google Calendar View scanned information in Google Calendar widgets, application, etc. Syllamaster Manual Event Creation

Future Plans  University licensed distribution  Set fee for a college/university to pay so all student’s have free access to Syllamaster  Grants QR generation access to all professors  Eventual Flashline integration  Preferred method  Beta test at Kent State University in 2014 for the fall semester  Take suggestions from current students Syllamaster
