PLASTIC CONSUMER PRODUCTS FOR AUTOMOBILES “Turning One Man’s Trash Into Our Treasure!”
2
THE PROBLEM About 1 million plastic bags are used each minute A single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade More than 3.5 million tons of plastic bags were discarded in 2008 The U.S. alone goes through an estimated 100 billion single-use bags Every square mile of ocean has ~46,000 pieces of plastic in it Of all discarded plastic storage items, 90% are plastic bags
3
BRAINSTORMING, RESEARCH AND IDEA GENERATION
4
IDENTIFY CRITERIA AND SPECIFY CONSTRAINTS Criteria Create a consumer product for the automobile industry Constraints No melting, shredding, burned. No trash art Stay as intact as possible
5
SOLUTIONS AND ALTERNATIVES Solution Dash board organizer with double sided tape Alternatives Seat covers, steering wheel covers, floor mates
6
IMPLEMENT THE PROPOSED SOLUTIONS Took it to a factory to heat seal the sections of the plastic bag. A section for a phone and sections for pen/pencils
7
MAKE A MODEL OR PROTOTYPE
8
EVALUATE THE SOLUTION AND ITS CONSEQUENCES Evaluation Keeps things organized for the driver Consequences Doesn’t take to many plastic bags out of land fills
9
REFINE THE DESIGN Instead of double sided tape replace it for Velcro/Dual-sided, reusable sticky tabs
10
CREATE THE FINAL DESIGN
11
COMMUNICATE THE PROCESSES AND THE RESULTS For two Wednesdays we met up in the second floor lounge of Lloyd Cassidy and went through the design processes. This is where we cam up for the idea of an organizer. And (insert name here) took it to his work and heat sealed the final product
