2 Getting to Know Font Families Each Font Family represents a complete set of characters, letters and symbols for a particular typeface. A Typeface is a specific size and style of type within a type family. Font families are divided into 3 categories: Serif, Sans Serif and symbol. 3 Serif vs. San Serif Serif Fonts have a tail or stroke which makes it easier for the eye to recognize words. Sans Serif Fonts do not have tails and are commonly used in headlines. 4 Getting to Know The Characters Palette The character palette helps you manually or automatically control type properties such as tracking and leading. You open the character palette from the options bar by selecting ‘Window’. Font Family Font Style Font Size Leading Tracking

6 Getting to Know The Option Bar Font Family Font Style Font Size Font Color Words can express an idea, but the appearance of the type is what drives the point home. After you create the type you can experiment with its appearance by changing its font, size, and color. You can also apply special effects that make it stand out, or appear to pop off the page.

Size: 8.5” x 11” Res: 300 Color: RGB 2.Type your Full Name 5x 3.Make sure you start a new Type Line for each name 4.Highlight your name and change the font, color and apply Warped Text. 5.Change each version of your name so it has a different font, color and warp.

10 Book Cover Design ASSIGNMENT: Design Book Cover 1. What is a book cover? What is it used for? What kind of information must be included on it? Think of these questions as you create sketches for an original book cover design. Your sketches are your method of visual brainstorming. They can be as tight (detailed and carefully rendered) or as rough (simple shapes, figures) as you want. The sketches can include words and other notations. 2. Once you decide on a sketch, start to acquire the necessary photographs & images for your book cover.
