1 The Dreaming ‘50s Judging the attitude of the picture, describe the social behavior of Americans? How is this different from the 1920s?

2 Franchises Business franchises were created where there are multiple business in many locations. Fast food restaurants were developed such as McDonalds that provided fast service by using the assembly line method. In 1955, the small restaurant in California was bought by salesman Ray Kroc for $2.7 million and expanded to the East Coast with new idea arches. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIuXv7Y8QA4

3 Baby Boom After soldiers returned to home from the war, Americans started moving outside the city creating the suburb lifestyle. As people developed more a family atmosphere there was a baby boom from the 1940s to the 1960s. In 1957, the height of the boom, a baby was born every seven seconds. Reason: Reunion of husbands after war, younger marriage age, desire to have larger families, and a good economy.

4 The Interstate Highway Inexpensive gasoline after the war and easy credit terms increased the purchase of cars during the 1950s. The “automania” led to constructing of roads linking cities, schools, shopping centers, and jobs. The Interstate Highway Act in 1956 41,000 miles of expressways. Impact: Created more cities and suburbs, developed long-haul trucking, tourism of national parks, mountains, and Disneyland.

6 Rock ‘N’ Roll A new music developed by African-Americans grew out of rhythm and blues and country and pop. People like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley made the music popular among teens. 7 The Urban Poor As whites moved to the suburbs, blacks moved from the South to the urban areas. Cities lost property and income taxes from the whites and could not afford to improve schools, transportation, or police and fire departments. The urban renewal program was created that redid housing areas, parking lots, shopping center, and factories. However, many areas were not touched or moved to another area such as building Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles for entertainment and not to help the poor.
