Colorado Frontier Town Model Building Project
2
This is not a group project. Each student will build one building for our model town. The best of all the buildings will be included on the town. The project is worth 50 pts.... the same value as a quiz. Your finished buildings are due on: Tue., February 17th. general info.
3
Grading Your model building will be graded using the following categories: CONSTRUCTION Is your model solid? Or is it falling apart? COLOR Is your model full-color or monotone?
4
Your model building will be graded using the following categories: APPEARANCE Is your model neat & clean, or sloppy? DETAIL Does your model contain extensive detail, or no detail at all? It’s the details that make great models great... open doors, transparent windows, real textures, etc. Grading
5
Your model building will be graded using the following categories: SCALE Is your model built to the correct scale? ACCURACY Is your model serious and historically accurate, or is it silly? Our town exists approximately 130 years in the past. Grading

Construction Each of you will be given manilla folder stock to make your building. If you wish to use a material other than the folder stock, you may, but it is your responsibility to buy it, and you must bring it to school to work with. This is not a homework assignment. It is a classwork assignment. You will NOT work on your model building at home and then come to class and tell me that you have nothing to do in class.
7
TIP: Color your building before assembling it.... while it is still flat. TIP: If you’re patient and careful, white glue is better than tape. It holds well, and can’t be seen! If you do use tape... (a) use masking tape instead of scotch tape, and (b) tape on the inside seams. TIP: Be creative... but not unrealistic or inappropriate. TIP: Focus your attention on the outside of your model. You are not allowed to make building interiors or ground areas. Construction

Basic Building Designs Use the LMC reference books to get a general idea of the look of the buildings on the 1870s. Don’t waste time looking for an exact picture of the kind of building that you’re doing. Use the books just to get a general impression of the architecture of the time. The laminated index cards on the board will also assist you with some of the various specialized designs. You can also go back to the Old-West Web-Quest to get inspiration and ideas.
10
With the exception of some of the specialized designs — like schools, churches, the livery stable, train station, and mills — most of the buildings on the 1870s frontier were of two basic design types... Basic Building Designs
