Heat of Solution
2
A dissolving reaction is either endothermic or exothermic! If there is a net gain of heat from the solvent by the solute, then the overall process is endothermic. If there is a net release of heat from the solute to the solvent, then the overall process is exothermic. Dissolving is described from the “point of view” of the solute. If the reaction is endothermic, then the solute will absorb heat from the solvent and the solvent’s temperature will decrease. If the reaction is exothermic, then the solute will release heat to the solvent and the solvent’s temperature will increase.

?thermic Dissolving Reaction If the solute releases heat to the solvent then the solvent’s temperature will increase. Heat of Solution Exothermic So is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?
19
Heat of Solution MOST dissolving reactions of solids in water are ENDOTHERMIC. HOWEVER, the dissolving of most acids, bases, and gases in water is an EXOTHERMIC reaction! This means that when an acid is dissolved in water, the temperature of the water increases. This means that when a base is dissolved in water, the temperature of the water increases. This means that when a gas is dissolved in water, the temperature of the water increases. When carbon dioxide is pumped into water to make soda, the temperature of the water increases.

Heat of Solution Diluting concentrated acids with water can be dangerous because the dissolving reaction if often VERY exothermic. If water is added to concentrated acid, acid steam can be produced and released up toward you face. DO AS YOU "OTTER" (OUGHT TO) ADD ACID TO "WOTTER" (WATER)! acid Acid steam!

Heat of Solution A practical use of heat of solution is the “break and shake” hot or cold pack!

Heat of Solution Ex.1) The dissolving of a gas in water is usually ____thermic. Ex.2) When a substance dissolves in water endothermically, the water’s temperature will ___________. Ex.3) Heat is __________ by a cold pack which means that the reaction going on inside is _____thermic. Ex.4) Which of the following substances could be used to make a “break and shake” COLD pack? (1) KNO 3 (3) LiBr (2) NaOH (4) HCl Ex.5)Which substance on Table I would make the best “break and shake” HOT pack? _______ exo endo absorbed decrease LiBr
