Where Do People Live?
7
Most people live along east coast Most populated city is Sydney, in New South Wales Another populated city: Brisbane, Queensland Population
8
Nearly 80% of Australians live in urban areas Australia is one of the world’s most urbanized countries (people live in cities) 70% of all Australians live in cities of more than 100,000 people Sydney has 3 1/2 million people Melbourne has about 3 million people Location

Climate Natural Resources Where do People Live? Trade -Southern/Eastern Hemisphere’s -Most people live in the cities in Southeastern & Southwestern coasts b/c of the Mild Climate (Not Too Hot or Cold) -80% of the population lives in urban (city) areas -Around 2,000mi. Southeast of Asia -Between the Indian & Pacific Oceans

Climate
11
Northern part of Australia is closest to the equator Tropical climate and is warm-to-hot all year round Gets more rain than any other part of the country Winter: wet and cool Summer: hot and dry Climate: North Australia
12
Desert is the largest part of Australia Little rain falls here Most of this area gets less than 10 inches of rain per year! Climate: Central Australia (The Outback)
13
Only the southeast and southwest corners have a temperate climate Summers aren’t too hot & winters aren’t too cold (similar to Georgia) Climate in these regions is the one that Australians prefer the most Most Australians live along southeastern coast Climate: Coasts
14
Tourists from the Northern Hemisphere often visit Australia’s warm and sunny beaches when it is cold in their homeland. Summer is the rainy season in the tropical regions of the north.
15
Tourists usually wait until spring or fall to visit the rural areas outside the cities (the bush) and the outback (the wilderness areas in the country’s interior). That is because the weather is milder in spring and fall.
16
The winter months of June through September are generally mild, but there are snowfields in the southern mountain regions. In the non-desert regions, Australians grow grains in central inland Queensland, central New South Wales, inland Victoria, southeast Australia, and southwest Western Australia. Australia Climate

Natural Resources
19
In the outback and across much of Australia, the ground is barren (has nothing growing on it). This is not ideal for farming. However, many important natural resources lie below the continent’s surface. Natural Resources
20
These resources include precious metals (gold and silver), uranium, coal, copper, and iron ore. Australia exports more coal and iron ore than any other country. Many industries use coal and iron ore.
21
Australia leads in mining bauxite, titanium, and industrial diamonds. No country has more reserves of lead, cadmium, or nickel. Uses for bauxite: in cement, chemicals, face makeup, soda cans, dishwashers, siding for houses, and other aluminum products....
22
Australia has exported nearly $400 billion worth of metals, minerals, and fuels in the past 20 years. Natural resources account for 1/3 of the country’s economy. Natural resources have always been important to Australian trade.

Major Trading Partners
25
China is Australia’s large neighbor to the north. Its economic growth has a direct impact on the Australian economy. Australia is the major supplier of natural resources to China. China needs Australian minerals and metals for industries. Location
26
Foreign tourists create about ¼ of Australia’s $81 billion tourist industry. Most international tourists to Australia come from New Zealand. After that, they mostly come from England, the United States, and China. Tourism
