Headlines- 5A*-C including English and Maths Salford is the most improved Local Authority in the North-West Provisional results indicate that 47.5% students gained 5+A*-C including English and maths, an improvement of 7.2% since 2008. Salford was at least 7% below the national average in 2008 and previous years. In 2009 Salford is likely to have narrowed the gap to the national average to 2% or less. The target for 2009 (44.5%) has been exceeded by 3% and we are close to the 2010 target (48.5%). Overall this means that about 150 more young people have achieved at least 5 good GCSEs, including English and maths than in 2008. Over the past five years Salford's GCSE results have improved dramatically from 38% of pupils achieving 5 more A* to Cs in 2004 to 76 % for 2009. In 2009 almost 50% of pupils achieved 5 good GCSE grades including maths and English in Salford; in 2005 it was 32 %.
