A time zone is a region of the Earth that has adopted the same standard time, usually referred to as the local time Earthstandard timeEarthstandard time Most adjacent time zones are exactly one hour apart It is based on the earth’s rotation from west to east every 24h
3
The earth passes through 360º = 15º for each hour (360/24=15) Sometimes we have irregularly- shaped zones that follow political boundaries (eg. NL time half hour difference) or that change their time seasonally (as with daylight saving time) daylight saving time daylight saving time
4
The (1 st )first Time zone starts at the Prime Meridian (0º longitude) and is called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) Time zones west of 0º are 1 hour earlier Time zones east of 0º are 1 hour later The two sides meet at 180º, this forms the International Date Line – at this point the date changes either one day ahead or one day back
