The change in Ways with food and kitchen appliances
2
Old ways to heat food Wood stove People use to Cook The Food in a pot over a fireplace built of stone. It burned wood and had a removable flat-surfaced disk that fit over the flames to put the food on to cook. Coal stoves Coal stoves are basically a mix between a regular stove and cooking the food over a fire place, it looks like a normal stove that we use today (but a bit more old-fashioned) but instead of gas powering the flames which heats the food, it is like a little fire place that you put coal on beneath the top. Here is a quick video demonstrating how the coal stove is used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY4myRrZtGQ Maori cooking Before the arrival of Pakeha, Maori had no metal or ceramic cooking equipment. Methods of cookery were very limited. Maori perfected cooking with wet steam & smoke. They could roast and bake in the open fire or hot ashes.

People in countryside areas used cold cellars. They would dig a cellar and store things like fruits and canned food there. Where these services were not available, people did not keep their food cold. They would usually just have to eat it fresh. Old ways to keep food cold Before refrigerators were used in homes, there was the Ice Box. This was a cupboard that was kept cool by a block of ice placed in a section at the top. The ice was replaced every day or so by an "Ice Man" who made deliveries the way "Milk Men" used to do. The Ice Box was less effective than a modern refrigerator, and smaller in size, so less food was stored in it.

Ovens Modern Ovens (a long with a lot of other new kitchen appliances) have a self cleaning mode. self-cleaning ovens work with extra heat. During the self-cleaning cycle, the oven heats up to about 900 degrees Fahrenheit. The high temperature burns off cooking dirt, leaving just a little ash that can be wiped away. These ovens come with an automatic lock that keeps the door closed during the cleaning cycle, stopping accidental burns. Stainless steel is also a new feature to the oven, making it look a lot more stylish and modern rather than whiteware. Ovens can also be fan forced, grilled etc. instead of just being able cooking the food. Stoves A lot of the new features for stoves are like the oven, with different types of cooking functions and style. Another new feature is that the stoves can be build in to a counter top. Built into the counter top Microwave The new features for the microwave are basically the same as the oven and the stove but one thing the microwave has that the stove or oven doesn’t have are carousel turntables, This ensures that food is cooked evenly, and so you don't have to rotate a dish.

Refrigerator, freezer and chilly bin The refrigerator is a relatively modern invention. It replaced the icebox. a few new features to the fridge are water and ice dispenser, controls to change the temperature of the fridge, and obviously (along with a lot of other technology) The style has improved. You can also get a freezer attached to the bottom or top of the fridge, the freezer is for food that you want extremely cold. There is also the chilly bin, which is like a portable freezer. Controls for temperature Water and ice dispenser Freezer attached to the bottom of fridge

Other Appliances Dish washer The dish washer is a new invention and was not around in the olden days, Some new dishwashers offer a lot of cycle options, including high pressure, a special mode for crystal or china and disinfecting mode. Modern dishwashers can be stylish, with fronts designed to look like kitchen cabinets. Some dish washers also can be made to do a silent wash, usually if your kitchen is close to your living room. Dish washer made to look like a kitchen cabinet. Electric mixers Electric mixers were invented to take the hard work out of mixing with a regular spoon or whisk, you can get an electric mixer wear you hold it or you can get one were it just dose it by itself. There are a lot more kitchen appliances than what I have stated on the previous slides but I have highlighted the most important ones.

The difference… The olden day ways (to heat food, keep it cold etc.) didn’t use any electricity to power it, whether as now it uses a lot. The appliances now are far more efficient, stylish and are easier to use with less work.
