WHAT IS A FLOOD Large body of water Covers an area of land Caused by many sources Each type of flood has a classification Happen all over the world Over 1/3 of natural disaster deaths are from floods.

Occurred in 1931 Lasted for 3-6 months Happened in cyclone season [10 cyclones in total] 140,000 were killed from drowning Lack of food and water 3.7 million people died from hunger and sickness ABOUT THE CENTRAL CHINA FLOOD

The Yangtze, Hwai and Hwang rivers overflowed Many villages were completely wiped out The capital at that time, became an island surrounded by over 100,000 square kilometres of water, this is more area than all of Portugal The cyclone season usually brings 2 storms but in 1931 there were 10. The water depth was round about 16 meters high. 87,000 km squared of land was flooded. DESTRUCTION CAUSED BY THE FLOOD

15 times number people lost in the Indonesia tsunami 2004 The death ranged from 145,000 – 4 million. The china floods has the highest recorded death toll in the natural disaster history. The flood caused a year long trial of death, starvation and disease. Most died from water prone diseases such as cholera and typhus DEATH TOLL

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A FLOOD IN 1931 Little was known back then about the world. They relied on the changing of weather patterns NOW People who live in a flood prone area have should have a plan. The plan will help them to survive by staying at home or evacuating

FIRST HEARING ABOUT A FLOOD WARNING MANY PEOPLE WILL NOT KNOWN THERE IS A FLOOD WARNING SO THERE IS A SIMPLE SYSTEM SO EVERYONE GET THE IN TIME. IF YOU GET THE WARNING FIRST YOU NEED TO: Turn on your radio for alerts Check if it is a false alarm Tell your neighbors Move vehicles, poisons and any electrical items to higher ground Check your survival kit

SHOULD I ACT, STAY OR GO BY JESS

ACT IF WE KNOW THERE IS A FLOOD COMING WE NEED TO ACT. THIS MAKES SURE EVERYONE’S LIFE IS SAVED. Stack furniture higher making sure the electrical items are on top Move any livestock and pets to higher ground

STAY MANY PEOPLE DURING A FLOOD WOULD LIKE TO STAY AND PROTECT THEIR HOME. SO IF YOU WANT TO STAY AND DEFEND YOU SHOULD Don’t eat anything that comes in contact with flood water Don’t use any gas or electrical appliances Beware of snakes and spiders Avoid flood water

GO IF YOU CHOSE TO LEAVE MAKE SURE TO TAKE EVERYTHING YOU NEED. THERE ARE 4 SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN STAY AWAY FROM HOME Pack everything you need; warm cloths, medication etc. Turn off your houses electricity Take all pets with records Never drive through flood water

CONCLUSION In conclusion the central china flood was devastating due to the large death toll and the destruction of china. Hopefully you learned about the flood from the heartbreak to the preparation of the flood
