W.U. –Week 9/23-9/27 Monday 9/24/13 Samuel wanted to see if a Hershey bar would melt faster in the car or in the sun. He put a regular size Hershey bar in the car at noon and another one in the sun at noon. He then timed how long it took for each candy bar to melt. 1. What is Samuel’s manipulated variable? 2. What is Samuel’s responding variable? 3. What is Samuel’s control variable(s)?

WARM UP – Week of 9/23-9/27 Monday 9/23/13 **Read the passage and answer the questions. Mr. Krabbs wants to make Bikini Bottoms a nicer place to live. He has created a new sauce that he thinks will reduce the production of body gas associated with eating crabby patties from the Krusty Krab. He recruits 100 customers with a history of gas problems. He has 50 of them (Group A) eat crabby patties with the new sauce. The other 50 (Group B) eat crabby patties with sauce that looks just like new sauce but is really just mixture of mayonnaise and food coloring. Both groups were told that they were getting the sauce that would reduce gas production. Two hours after eating the crabby patties, 30 customers in group A reported having fewer gas problems and 8 customers in group B reported having fewer gas problems. 1. Which people are in the control group? Group B 2. What is the manipulated (independent) variable? 3. What is the responding (dependent) variable? 4. 4.What should Mr. Krabs’ conclusion be? **Table of Contents – Add: 9/23 MINERALS (NISCD) ppt. /pg. 22

What is a mineral? All minerals have these 5 characteristics: Naturally Occurring Inorganic Solid Crystal Structure Definite Chemical Composition
8
Just remember…. Nerds Naturally Occurring In Inorganic Science Solid Can’t Crystal Structure Dance (cool) Definite Chemical Composition
10
Naturally Occurring Must occur in nature Must be found in Earth’s crust and NOT manufactured by people

Inorganic Cannot come from something that is alive or has ever been alive!

Solid Definite volume and shape (Cannot flow like liquid)

Crystal Structure (Particles must line up in a pattern that repeats over and over again (Specific shape) Crystals have flat sides (faces) and sharp edges and corners Sometimes its obvious…sometimes you need a microscope to see

Definite Chemical Composition A mineral always contains certain elements in the same proportion Salt: NaCl (Na-Sodium…Cl-Chloride)
