2 Metropole Ruhr | Transport links at a glance The Metropole Ruhr is one of Europe's best connected regions in terms of transport: a dense road network (4,664 km of regional roads) the strongest rail infrastructure (i.e. 1,600 km of rails with 70 stations and 5 larger formation yards) the most dense system of canals and ports (572 km of waterways) the largest inland port and biggest canal port as well as highest-level transport association in Europe an international (Dortmund) and a national airport (Essen/Mülheim) in the region the international airports of Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn are easily reached

9 Metropole Ruhr | Air traffic 2009 From the core cities of the Metropole Ruhr, Düsseldorf airport can be reached in about 45 minutes, and the airports of Münster and Cologne/Bonn in about 60 minutes. Dortmund airport With more than 1.7 million passengers per year and 65 destinations, it is the fourth-largest traffic airport in NRW Düsseldorf airport With more than 18 million passengers per year and 180 destinations, it is the third-largest traffic airport in Germany Cologne/Bonn airport With more than 9.7 million passengers and 124 destinations, it is the six-largest airport in Germany Münster-Osnabrück airport About 1.4 million passengers per year 65 destinations
