4
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Industry-Academic Collaboration Korea Clear evidence that enlightened companies (AAA) are looking to develop their product range through co- operation with leading research universities Insufficient time to discuss funding models China Again, clear evidence of strong collaboration
5
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Collaboration: Examples Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen Fingu and Wuhan University Jushri, Shanghai
6
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Comparisons with the UK (1) In both China and Korea, industrial organisations largely undertake applied research and advanced development (r&D) Research institutes, such as ETRI (Korea) and SHWCRC (China) conduct more long- term research and advanced development (R&D)
7
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Comparisons with the UK (2) Leading research-based universities in both countries conduct blue-skies research (R++) UK is seen as being exceedingly successful in the management of R&D laboratories
8
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Research Activities Majority of (industry) research shown was focused upon clearly-defined medium-term markets, notably WiMAX and 3G LTE This is reflected in standards contributions, product development and IPR generation
9
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Research Activities Areas of Research - Three Common Themes Service-related Network-related Wireless-related Research topics & projects seen by the mission team were not significantly different from research ongoing in the UK Research quality appeared comparable

A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea 4G - What is it ? Broadly speaking, Europe and the US are adopting an evolutionary approach, whereas... Asian perspective Wide area, 100Mbps air interface Shorter range 1Gbps nomadic air interface Analogous to the step transition between 2G and 3G
11
A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea 4G – Technology, Testbeds & Commercialisation Korea & China are both very active in 4G research, a position reflected in… patents generated input to standards bodies, and the establishment of 4G experimental testbeds in both countries over the past year Samsung (Korea), FuTURE (China) Unfortunately there was not the opportunity to visit the 4G testbed facilities It is nonetheless important to report on these developments - some detail is included in mission report

A UK Trade & Investment Mission to China and Korea Other Observations Company Staffing China and Korea are both seeing the increasing return of established technical staff with extensive industrial and academic experience from both the US and Europe Engineers are promoted young to middle management levels, particularly in China, where a large number of key executives are in their early-mid thirties Another striking feature in China, (unlike Korea, Japan and Europe), was that a large number of senior executives met during the mission were female Both countries have realised the importance of design, rather than just technology, and have been looking to the UK for such expertise
