Biography Born December 10, 1830 in Amherst MA Her family was well known/ well respected Emily’s Father was very strict He would censor all of her reading and she had to smuggle novels into the house she Attended Amherst Academy from 1840 to 1847 and Mount Holyoke Female Seminary from 1847 to 1848 she lived in Amherst all of her life and became a recluse around 1862 Dickinson died a few years later on May 15, 1886

3. POETRY BY EMILY It is said that Emily is one of the greatest writers of all time. Even though only seven of here poems were published during her life time, she is well respected for the hundreds of poems her sister, Lavinia Dickinson, published after she pasted.

4. Emily’s influence She was one of America’s early female writers and she served as inspiration for future female poets. She was a observer of nature and her poems reflect that. She also focused on interpreting emotions.

7. Explication of “Hope”… Emily uses personification to give hope animals like characteristics. She makes it seem like a bid that sits a watches over the heart and soul. She talks about the strength of hope and how it would take a lot to get rid of it.

9. More Info Many of Emily Poems were about nature, and other transcendental beliefs. In many of her poems she give characteristics of animals to human emotion. ““Hope” is the thing with feathers” is a prime example of this. Many people now associate the thought of hope with birds.

10. My opinion I myself, believe that Emily is one of the greatest female writers of her time. The way she expresses herself through her poetry is a major contrast to the way she was the last few years of her life which amazes me. Since doing this project “Hope” has become one of my favorite poems.
