2. What is the Solar System? A solar system is made up of a star and all of the objects that orbit (travel around) it. Our solar system is made up of 8 planets, which orbit around the sun. We will talk briefly about each of them in turn.

3. Our Solar System A picture of our solar system This is the sun. The sun is the star in our solar system. Everything else that is shown here is each a separate planet in our solar system. These planets orbit the sun.

4. The Sun The sun is a star, and is the center of our solar system. All of the planets in our solar system, along with dwarf planets, comets, and asteroids, orbit the sun. Without the sun, there would be no life on earth. This is the sun.

5. Mercury Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system. It is only slightly larger than Earth’s moon. It is also the closest planet to the sun. There are no moons orbiting Mercury, and Mercury has no rings, either. This is Mercury.

6. Venus Venus is the second- closest planet to the sun, and it is only slightly smaller than Earth. There are no moons orbiting Venus, nor are there any rings around it. This is Venus.

7. Earth Earth, our home planet, is the only known planet that has living things on it. Although many planets have atmospheres, only Earth’s atmosphere is breathable. It has one moon orbiting it. This is Earth.

8. Mars Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It has a thin atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon. It has 2 moons, but no rings around it. This is Mars.

9. Jupiter Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and the fifth planet from the sun. It has dozens of moons, and the Great Red Spot, a gigantic storm that has been raging for many years. This is Jupiter.

10. Saturn Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. It has beautiful rings and many moons. It is a large planet composed of gases, therefore, it doesn’t have a solid surface. This is Saturn.

11. Uranus Uranus is the seventh planet from our sun. It is considered an ice giant, made up of a dense fluid of “icy” materials. It has over a dozen moons. This is Uranus.

12. Neptune Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. It has rings and many moons. It takes about 165 Earth years for Neptune to orbit once around the sun! This is Neptune.
