Our research work has national and international relevance which, in turn, informs and strengthens our teaching programs, keeping our students at the leading edge of their discipline and aligned to current and future industry needs. The Australian Research Council (ARC) recently released the results of the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative. The ERA exercise ranks all university research outcomes, categorised by field of research, against international benchmarks on a five point scale, with 3 as the world standard and 5 well above world standard; Two thirds of our assessed fields of research were evaluated at world standard or above. Eight fields covering areas vital to the Western Australian economy (minerals, agriculture and medical sciences) were ranked as well above or above world standard. The results reflect the world class quality of the research undertaken at Murdoch and reaffirm our well established areas of research strength encompassed in the Research Institutes.
