A FFECTS OF THE G EOGRAPHY There are hills and mountains through the country, but they are not very rugged. Although it is surrounded by water, there are not many harbors. Who did Italian people trade with than? Each other-the people in other parts of modern day Italy

F OUNDING OF R OME People from central Europe, later known as Latins, settled on land south of the Tiber River. They raised crops and animals and were ancestors of the Romans. Rome started off as a Latin community on a hill overlooking the Tiber River. It was built on seven hills. This made it easy to what? Defend

F OUNDING OF R OME Rome’s inland location protected them from pirates. Yet the sea was only 15 miles away, so they could easily get salt and fish. Rome was in the center of Italy, making it ideal for trading with the rest of Italy. The Tiber River gave them a route to the sea to trade with other Mediterranean civilizations. They gained sea routes to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Legends about how Rome started: brother drama, stealing babies, and more brother drama.
