A Brief Program Overview
Students are taking 6 IB courses from the hexagon below

The IB Diploma in a Nutshell…
Students will take at least 3 exams at HL (Higher Level) in grade 12 Students will take 2-3 exams at SL (Standard Level) over grade 11 and 12 Altogether, these courses will be evaluated to give a total Diploma score out of 42, with 3 additional points for ToK and the Extended Essay for a total of 45 Students are also responsible for completing CAS and an Extended Essay

CAS Creativity, Action, Service
IB cares about the education of the whole student 50 hours required in each area, and a minimum of 3 activities per area Students meet with their CAS Counsellor several times over the course of their time in IB Recording of hours through ManageBac

Extended Essay Planning typically begins in 2013 and all continuing IB students will have extended essay time in June during the exam block word paper on a topic of their choosing…can be from any discipline that they are in Time management is essential to the completion of this task Last year’s timeline is available at ibcb.ca

This year’s courses… IB1 is an incredibly rewarding, yet incredibly challenging year It is the first full year of the IB Diploma curriculum IB rubrics will come into play on major assignments Some formal IB assignments will be completed this year Some subjects will examine this year

Common IB1 Challenges Grade 11 is the toughest year of IB
Time management is the key to success Smart homework strategies Students are encouraged to take educated risks by engaging in class material Read the question first then answer that specific question Perfectionism: “Be perfect in the time that you have”

Stress management and health
Sleep is the friend of an IB student IB study guides are excellent resources, but they’re much cheaper if you purchase them from the US (amazon.com) Students must make and take time for themselves Understand that being excellent does not necessarily mean being perfect Be perfect/excellent in the time that you have

When times get tough… Your child may be different this September than they were last September… Keep the lines of communication open (IB Coordinator, Guidance Counsellors, Teachers, Vice Principals, Principal) Home support…and cookies or ice cream or both

Extra Help Students are encouraged to seek out their teachers for help and, if needed, to seek out tutors at school Guidance can point your child in the direction of a tutor Many departments have their own allotted extra help times

IB Marks and What They Mean
Students and parents need to adjust to the different benchmarks used The established conversions are as follows 7 = %; 6 = 90-95%; 5 = 80-89%; 4 = 70-79%; 3 = 60-69%; 2 = 50-59% 1 = Failing Condition

Exams and IB Fees All IB1 students this year are Anticipated Candidates The IB Annual Fee sheet will go home the first week of October If they are taking an exam this year, they will register in mid-October One-time exam registration fee of $175 (good for both years) + $120 per exam taken Exam fees are normally collected in January Exams take place between May 2nd and 22nd – parent supervisors are needed

University and Option Sheets
What universities want (6 X 4U/M courses with some pre-requisites) Engineering: ENG4U, SCH4U, SPH4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 1 other Sciences: ENG4U, 2 of 3 Sciences, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 1 other Commerce: ENG4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, + 3 other Liberal Arts: ENG4U, + 5 others Most IB students have 8 + to choose from Visit university sessions

Option Sheets February is option sheet time
Students really need to have an idea of what university programs to which they want to apply…check electronicinfo.ca A good idea to meet with either IB Coordinator or Guidance for advice April: Student viability in the program is checked at this time

ManageBac an electronic community meant to quickly connect teachers, students, and parents Parents are able to see what their child joins, aiding them in assisting their child at home Please ask your child’s subject teacher about it if the course is not appearing if you do not have an account
