Shared Christian Praxis
2
Shared Christian Praxis is a catechetical approach which offered a model which intended to educate in faith with educational links. (Whenman, 2012).
3
This approach was developed by Thomas Groome in the 1980’s. He aimed to link contemporary educational theory with religious education.
4
The shared-praxis model involved a 5 stage learning process: Naming present action- students identify action related to the topic. Critical Reflection- shared reflection on the action. Dialogue- Story and vision of the Faith Community are discussed. Accessing the story- Interaction between the Christian story and the students experiences. Vision- reflection, future action and change.
5
Advantages The content was related to students own lives and experiences. The 5 steps (movements) built on students knowledge and experiences. Provides teachers with a more creative and realistic role in deigning the religion class.
6
Limitations This approach did not require any level of creativity or resourcefulness. Designed for learning in small groups. Students were expected to share their religious faith and recall the Christian story and vision. This was problematic due to a population of students from different religious backgrounds.
7
Reflection Identify aspects of teaching religion and teaching people to be religious in a particular way.
