1
Introduction to Organic & Biochemistry How will this class be different than the chemistry I already took?
2
Periodic Table Remember this? Now it is this!
3
Most Important Elements
4
Remember this stuff? PV = nRT 6.02 x 10 23 Iron (III) chloride D = m/v STP q = mcΔT WE DON’T NEED IT FOR ORGANIC OR BIOCHEMISTRY!
5
What about all those ions? Sulfate SO 4 2- Phosphate PO 4 3- Nitrate NO 3 - Carbonate CO 3 2- Hydroxide OH - Chlorate ClO 3 - All inorganic
6
So what will we learn? This class focuses on organic chemistry and biochemistry. Organic chemistry – the study of carbon compounds Biochemistry – The study of the chemical substances and vital processes occurring in living organisms; The study of carbon compounds that crawl
7
What will we be doing? Learn the systematic approach to naming organic compounds and apply it to a variety of functional groups Draw structures of a variety of organic chemicals Write equations for organic chemical reactions Describe applications of these organic chemical compounds to everyday life
8
Groups attached to carbon determines a compound’s properties, name, and reactivity!
9
But what about labs? Although we only have one period a day, we will spend lots of time in the lab. Labs are mostly done on a microscale basis.
10
New terminology Instead of compound, we say molecule. Instead of writing a formula in its simplest form, we write it like it looks. – Not C 3 H 8 O but CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH – We also abbreviate formulas using line structure CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH becomes
11
But first… We need to review some basics from chemistry including: – Valence electrons – Electron configuration – Chemical bonding – Lewis structures – Molecular geometry & VSEPR theory
