An epic poem is a long, narrative poem about the deeds of a hero.

Epic Characteristic #1 The setting is broad (covering many places) and often includes supernatural realms

Epic Characteristic #2 There is usually an invocation, or a request to a higher power for help or inspiration in telling the tale

Epic Characteristic #3 The poem usually begins “in medias res” and then flashes back “In medias res” – in the middle of things

Epic Characteristic #4 The poem usually uses a number of epithets
Epithets – Repeated descriptive term usually with someone’s name Dawn with it’s ringlets of gold

Epic Characteristic #5 Uses epic similes
Simile – comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as” Epic simile – extended simile, often running several lines and used for emphasis

Example: “He was like a wild-boar or a lion when he turns this way and that among the hounds and huntsmen to defy them in his strength.”

The Odyssey One of the oldest works of Western literature still known today. The epic poem centers around the hero Odysseus who spends a number of years trying to get home after fighting in the Trojan War.
