What is the ROV Competition? A competition that challenges K-12 and college students from all over the world to design and build ROVs to tackle missions modeled after scenarios from the ocean workplace.
3
How is it different from the Club Celebration? We are so glad you asked! Formal judging You will complete MATE Missions and compete against other schools Any school in the region may compete (not just the schools who are in Shedd’s ROV program) There may be a fee attached
4
Why would I compete? If you would like to try your hand at completing missions as posted by MATE If you would like to compete If you would like to attempt to go to the International Competition To keep the ROV fun going! Check out what other ROV teams are doing! Extend your learning
5
Levels of Competition Scout Level Great for beginners! Upper elementary schools with robotics experience Middle schools High schools new to robotics Scout level is free to participants. SCOUT teams participate in regional events ONLY.
6
Levels of Competition Ranger Level Recommended for middle schools with robotics experience High schools Community colleges and universities new to robotics The fee for Ranger is $100 Scholarships may be available
7
Levels of Competition Navigator The NAVIGATOR class is a step up from the SCOUT class, but not as complex as the RANGER class Not available at our regional competition Explorer College teams only We do offer Explorer, so it might be interesting to check out the teams who are competing!
8
Competition Basics You must complete: Product Demonstration (aka underwater mission tasks) Technical Documentation (aka technical reports)- not required at our competition Sales Presentation (aka engineering presentations) Marketing Display (aka poster display)

19
SCOUT Missions Task 1: Science Under the Ice Counting species and sampling organisms, deploying in instruments, and collecting data about an iceberg to determine its volume and threat level to offshore installations Task 2: Subsea Pipeline Inspection & Repair Finding and removing or replacing a corroded section of oil pipeline and preparing a wellhead for delivery of a Christmas tree Task 3: Offshore Oilfield Production & Maintenance (Ranger Only) testing the grounding of anodes on the “leg” of an oil platform, determining the angle that a wellhead emerges from the seafloor, and controlling the flow of oil through a pipeline

What will I need to get started? A great attitude! A Competition Manual, which can be found on MATE’s website (Scout or Ranger) A working ROV A knowledge of ROV Missions
