Our Benefactor: Helen Macpherson Smith – born 1874 Macphersons – pastoralists western district Smiths – timber merchants Helen married William Schutt (1901) – became Justice of the Supreme Court Helen moved to Europe 1923 William died in 1933 During the war, Helen lived in Switzerland Helen died in Cannes – 1951

Our Trust: Trust established in 1951 Initial corpus of £275,000 – now ~ $80 million 3 Grant rounds per year – end of September, January & April (Approx $5 million per year – average grants $25-30K) Total grants to date of over $80 million Support ‘Victorian-based’ Charitable Institutions, Public Benevolent Institutions & Health Promotion Charities www.hmstrust.org.au

Our Priority Areas: Projects which involve partnerships Projects which leverage funds from a variety of sources Pilot projects & encourage innovation Projects which are sustainable beyond the funding by the Trust Systemic evaluations Applications from organisations in rural and regional Victoria, having regard to the pioneer pastoral wealth generated by Helen’s forebears

HMS Bushfires Grants Fund: $2M available over the next 2 years Medium to long-term projects Community-based Projects related to rebuilding community lifestyles and spirit Working in conjunction with the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction & Recovery Authority the Bushfire Emergency Relief Fund & other funders Not to fund projects considered government responsibility

L E W Carty Charitable Fund: To assist or promote research into the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of physical or mental disorders of human beings. Preference is given to specific laboratory research projects, or for essential equipment to undertake such projects. One grant round per year (closes 31 March) Approximately $500K per year available for grants www.carty.org.au
