3 Protests Protest:  Held marches, wrote letters to British Government Colonists boycotted buying taxed goods British Government taxed tea, glass, and paint 1773: Colonists boarded a British ship and dumped all the tea into the harbor in protest of the taxes

4 Revolution Begins Revolution: a sudden, complete change of government. British soldiers fought members of Massachusetts militia (volunteer army) May 20, 1775 – Mecklenburg County declared independence from Britain Patriot: colonist who supported American Revolution Loyalist: colonist who stayed loyal to Britain.

5 Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 – representatives from 13 colonies approved the Declaration of Independence  In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The Declaration listed reasons colonists wanted to be free from Britain. 3 North Carolinians signed the Declaration North Carolina set up a new state government  House of Representatives & Senate

6 Battles in NC General Charles Cornwallis – British Loyalist Hornet’s Nest- hard fought battle between British and Patriots Battle of King Mountain- Patriots won Battle of Guilford Courthouse – British won October 1781 British surrendered to American General George Washington in Yorktown, VA.

7 Constitution 12 representatives met to discuss idea of federal (national) government Constitution: a written plan for government.  Divided power between state and federal government North Carolina one of the last state to ratify (approve) Constitution State leaders wanted a Bill of Rights  Lists the freedoms and rights people have
