2 WACE Requirements Breadth and Depth Complete at least 20 course units. Up to 10 course equivalents can be from endorsed programs. Complete 4 units of English or Literature during Yr 11 and 12 (at least two of these units must be in Year 12). In Year 12) study at least one pair of course units from each of List A (arts/languages/social science) and List B (mathematics/science/technology).

3 WACE con’t Achievement Standard Achieve a C grade average or better across the best 16 course units of which at least 8 units must be completed in Year 12. Endorsed programs and /or VET credit transfer can reduce the required number of course units by up to 6 units. English Language Competence Achieve a C grade or better in any Stage 1 or higher course unit in English or Literature. Exams for stage 3 courses, unless exempt. Stage 2 WACE Exit exams are optional with conditions.

4 VET EXAM EXEMPTION A student will be exempt from sitting exams only if they are: Enrolled to complete in Year 12, at least 220 nominal hours of VET (which must lead towards the completion of at least one qualification or skill set that meets a licensing, regulatory or defined industry need)… AND … Enrolled in 3 or less Stage 3 courses.

5 Stage 2 WACE Exit Exams WACE Examinations for Stage 2 Year 12 students are optional. Students who ‘Opt Out of Stage 2 WACE Exit Exams’ will not be able to use the achievement in those courses in the calculation of an ATAR.

8 Requirements for University Entrance WACE requirements met. English Competence - Scaled score of 50 or better in English 2C/2D or 3A/3B or Literature 3A/3B. Prerequisite courses. TEA – Sum of best 4 scaled scores (TEA out of 400). Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will be calculated from the TEA.

9 University alternative entry All 5 universities in WA have alternative entry pathways. Clarify all entry requirements with the relevant universities. Research by checking the specific website English requirements may be restricted to particular units (usually a minimum of stage 2 English) Accumulate an ATAR over five (5) years

11 11 11 All courses stage 1, 2 & 3; VET Certificate Studies and Endorsed Programs contribute to the achievement of graduation. Western Australian Certificate of Education.

12 ENDORSED PROGRAMS Recognise areas of learning not covered by courses. May contribute up to 10 unit equivalents towards WACE breadth and depth requirement. Can reduce the ‘C’ grade average requirement for WACE. Examples include: o Cadets WA o performance in school productions, music & school trips o examinations in music, speech and drama o university studies o Keys for Life pre-driver education program. Evidence may include a combination of signed attendance records, journals, self evaluation, certificates and validation. See Ms Sayers Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

13 Endorsed Program Examples

14 Certificate Courses (VET) and the Benefits Provides credit towards the achievement of WACE. Demand for young people with well-developed vocational skills remains strong. Students can begin training at school and those who successfully complete all of the requirements will gain a nationally recognised certificate qualification e.g. Certificate II Business.

15 Certificate - Vocational Education and Training and the Benefits Direct links into post school Certificate course options at a State Training Provider. Students can take part in the School Pre- Apprenticeship Program and School-based Traineeships which can reduce a post school apprenticeship. These Certificate qualifications together with course grades will support students to have the competitive edge when seeking STP/TAFE entry and or employment in various industries.

24 Checklist for Students to be Successful in Year 11 Completion of all courses. A ‘C’ average (minimum requirement). A ‘C’ or better in English or Literature. To continue University pathway: a competitive score for Uni entry (65% average or better) – ‘B’ grades. To continue STP/TAFE Diploma pathway: A minimum ‘C’ in all Year 11 courses. Working towards completion of a Certificate II course (Year 12).

25 Repeat Course Units Students can repeat course units. However repeated units will only count once for WACE requirements. The highest grade recorded for the unit will be used when calculating the ‘C’ average. Repeating course units may impact on the students being granted Private Study.

26 Stage 2 Courses Students who wish to use Stage 2 results for university selection will need to have marks in the top quartile of the state-wide distribution in these units. Marks of 75+. Stage 2 Courses available - 2CD MAT and 2CDENG 26

27 Prior to completing Year 11, each student is expected to have: Submitted all assessment requirements in each Course. Achieved a ‘C’ grade average over five (5) Courses. Handed their signed Year 12 Status – 2015 form to Ms Schofield, Dean of Studies.

28 Expectations of Year 11 Students who have been deemed not to have gained their Year 12 Status will be required to have an interview with Ms Schofield or one of the Course Advisors before the end of Term 4. Students may be designated as Year 11 in the following academic year (Year 12) and not be permitted to attend Year 12 extra curricular activities until they are on the pathway to achieving their WACE at the end of 2015.

29 PRIVATE STUDY 2015 Eligible students will have: An ATAR/University pathway Achieved sound results in Year 11 (‘B’ average); Demonstrated a high level of responsibility for their learning and time management. Approval will depend on assessment of each individual case by the College’s Course and Careers Advisor, with whom the student and parent(s) will be required to meet to fully consider the implications of the reduction to five full-year courses.

30 Alternatives to Returning to School in 2015 These pathways are: STP/TAFE full-time; Apprenticeship or a traineeship; Approved employment; Private Training provider.

33 Course Confirmation You are able to select from THREE (3) packages which offer the following: 1. An Apprenticeship or Traineeship pathway – complete Package 1, the Career Access Program; 2. State Training Provider/TAFE and Alternate University Entry pathway – mainly Stage 1 courses and full Certificate II, which give you the competitive edge – complete Package 2; 3. University pathway – mainly Stage 2 or 3 courses in Year 12 (preferably Stage 3) – complete Package 3.

34 Package 1 – Career Access Program (CAP) CAP – 3 days in school; 2 days outside school. Five (5) compulsory courses: - English 1CENG + 1DENG; - Mathematics 1DMAT + 1EMAT; - Certificate II in Business (Completed over Year 11 & 12); - Workplace Learning 1CWPL + 1DWPL. Industry Focus area Hospitality or Industrial Arts STP/TAFE, PAiS, SBT/SBA. Meeting with Ms Hamburg

35 Package 2 – State Training Provider STP/TAFE and Alternate University Entry  Select ONE of ENGLISH and list this as your first course in the Course Confirmation table: (i) 1CLIT + 1DLIT; (ii) 2CENG + 2DENG (if you select this English course, you will have to sit exams);  Select ONE list B course and list in the Course Confirmation table.  Confirm ONE of these VET options to make yourself highly competitive for STP/TAFE entry.

37 Package 2 – State Training Provider STP/TAFE  Confirm FOUR other courses (these should be predominantly at Stage 1);  You can only have a total of three (3) Certificates inyour suite of courses;  You may select an extra VET option which is the course 1CMDTM + 1DMDTW – delivers a Certificate II in Engineering (for students continuing on from Year 11).

38 Package 2 – State Training Provider/TAFE  You may wish to consider attending ONE of STP/TAFE or Work Place Learning, one day a week. If so tick ( ) in the box:   Note: - If you select Work Place Learning, then you need to make this your 6th course. - If you select STP/TAFE, ONCE it is confirmed that you are enrolled at STP/TAFE, you may then drop one of the 6 selected courses. This means you will study 5 courses at school and one course at STP/TAFE. TOTAL of SIX (6) SELECTIONS.

40 Package 3 – University Pathway  Select ONE of : - English 2CENG + 2DENG. - English 3AENG + 3BENG; or - Literature 3ALIT + 3BLIT;  Select FIVE (5) other courses. At least three (3) of these must be at Stage 2 or 3.

41 Package 3 – University Pathway  If one of these courses is 2C/2D ENG, 2A/2B MAT or 2C/2D MAT, then at least three (3) of the other courses must be at Stage 3 in Year 12.  Students can select from of the many CERTIFICATE courses to give you the competitive edge for STP/TAFE and portfolio entry.  Students will sit external WACE exams in Stage 3 courses at the end of 2015.  Stage 2 WACE exit exams in 2015 will be optional. Students who opt out of Stage 2 WACE exit exams will not be able to use the achievement in those courses in the calculation of an ATAR.

42 Package 3 – University Pathway  If you apply for Private Study, you must gain endorsement through an interview with the Course and Careers Advisor.  Hence Ms Schofield or Ms Johnson must have signed against your Private Study that this has been approved OR have written the date for the scheduled interview.

43 Final Check for all Students Complete the front page. Select and complete the preferred Package 1, 2 or 3. Gain a signature of endorsement from the appropriate teacher for ALL courses/certificates. The teacher may decline. (Recommendations made in Semester One Report comment) Students choosing courses not recommended by their teachers MUST have an appointment with a Course & Careers Advisor BEFORE handing in the selection form. The appointment must be made before the end of Term 2. Students changing courses must indicate this on the front page and in the selection table. Ensure at least one list A and one list B course.

44 Unacceptable Combinations of Courses  Biological & Human Biological Sciences;  English & Literature;  Stage 2 and Stage 3 in same course;  Select only from available Mathematics pathways.

45 Will I get what I want?  Most students get their six courses.  If not, then two courses occur at the same time or the course has been cancelled.  Pre-requisites will be enforced.  Have a 7 th choice in mind.  Re-selection occurs mid Term three.

46 Can I Change?  Early is better. THIS YEAR is preferable. Any change in 2015 needs to be done by the end of Week 5, Term One.  Restricted choices.  some classes may be full  choices must fit the timetable  You will need to catch up on assessments. 6 courses + weeks missed
