Say “No” to Bullies

It might start with a misunderstanding.

Then it turns into rumors and teasing.

Most of the fights at our school are the result of rumors!

Some sad facts about bullying: About 160,000 children miss school every day due to fear of bullying by other students. Source: National Education Association.

Bullying is anything that hurts someone, belittles them or makes them feel bad. Some types of bullying are: * Verbal (name-calling) *Physical (punching, pushing) *Relational (leaving someone out of a game or group on purpose) *Extortion (stealing someone’s money or toys) *Cyber bullying (using computers, the Internet, mobile phones, etc. to bully others)

Bullying can have devastating long-term effects on its victims.

Eighty percent (80%) of adolescents reported bullying incidences during their school years.

Both boys and girls bully -- with female bullying taking indirect, manipulative forms.

Bullying peaks in the middle school years. Remember to treat others like you want them to treat you.

One in seven students is either a bully or victim. 56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school.

Bullying is learned behavior that is taught and/or experienced at home or at school.

Up to thirty-five percent (35%) of chronic adolescent bullies spend time in prison as adults.

So, how can we help stop bullying?

Watch out for one another! *Don’t stand by and watch bullying happen. *Tell the bully to STOP! * If you tell an adult you’re not a rat, you’re a friend!

Find a friend who shares your goals.

Focus on the positives and ignore the negatives as much as possible.

Accept our differences! It’s what makes our country so great!

Say no to bad choices (bullies, drugs, violence, cheating, etc.)

Take pride in our school – uniforms and all!

If you see someone who needs a friend- be one!

Make learning your focus at school.

Join a team to feel a part of something. Learn good sportsmanship.

Use physical activity not drugs or violence to get your natural high.

Over 2/3 of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying. At Blackstock, if you tell us, we can try to fix it. We will respond. Bullying is NOT OK! But, it takes ALL of us to make it STOP!
