Harvesting, Holding, and Transporting Fish Lesson 8

Harvesting, Holding, and Transporting Fish What does it take to get a steer from the feedlot to the slaughter plant? What would be different in getting fish from the farm to the slaughter plant?

Objectives Identify methods of harvesting fish. Describe methods of holding fish. Describe methods of transporting fish.

Terms Dip net Dry transport Fee lake ponds Floating Crate Haul tank Holding pond Seine nets Tanks

How are fish harvested? Method of harvesting fish depends on: –Type of facility the fish are kept in. –The intended usage fro the fish after harvesting. –Most common method is the seine net. a large net used to harvest fish.

How are fish harvested from ponds? Seine net used. Size of holes in net control the size of fish harvested. Weights are on the bottom of net to keep net on the bottom. Top of net is held above the water to keep fish from swimming over net.

How are fish harvested from ponds? Nets are pulled by: –Hand –Boat –Tractor Water level is often lowered in ponds to make harvest easier.

How are fish harvested?

How are fish harvested in tanks, raceways, or cages? Nets are used. Called dip nets. –Smaller nets used to harvest fish from tanks or raceways. Cage harvesting –Cage is lifted out of water. –Fish dumped out.

How are fish harvested in fee-lake ponds? Fee-lake ponds –People pay to fish. –Involves fishing poles and bait.

How are fish held? Once fish are captured they need to be sorted and sold. They must remain in good condition. Some fish are held for a period of time to improve the quality of their flesh. Other considerations: –Keep weight loss to a minimum. –Prevent losses to natural enemies. –Prevent from theft.

How are fish held? Nets in ponds –Good for a short period of time. Ponds –Called holding ponds. Small ponds used to hold fish. –Held for a longer time. –Used if fish are delicate.

How are fish held? Tanks –Constructed of plastic, concrete or other material. –Be sure inside of tank is smooth and free of obstruction. –Keep a good supply of clean, fresh water.

How are fish held? Floating crate –Box designed to hold fish by using slats or netting to keep the fish in. –Used for a small number of fish. www.sun.ac.za/kie/unistel/ aquaculture/aquastel

How are fish transported? Once fish are captured and held, they need to be transported to the market or processing facility. Large producer the processor or buyer supplies transportation. Small producer the producer must supply transportation.

How are fish transported? Dry transport –When fish are placed in baskets and moved without water. –Used for a small number of hardy fish to transport a short distance. Plastic bags –Very common method. –Bags filled 2/3 with water and 1/3 air. –Bags placed in boxes to protect bags.

How are fish transported? Metal cans –Various sizes can be used. –Care must be made to make sure the water remains stable in container. Barrels –Used to transport large number of fish. –Barrels filled with water. –Fish placed in barrel. –Made from plastic or metal. –Used to be wood.

How are fish transported? Specialized vehicles –Large tanks to transport large number of fish. –Vary from pickup truck to semi truck. –Some have filtering system built in to clean and re-circulate water. Haul tank –A tank that will fit in a pickup truck bed. –Allow farmer to transport fish when needed but the truck can be used for other purposes.
