2 Terms to Know: Fossils- the remains or traces of animals or plants that lived long ago. *Dinosaur bones, teeth, and eggs are fossils.* Paleontologists- scientists who study the remains of fossils. Extinction- a process in which species die out. Richard Owen- British scientist who named the fossils found, “Dinosauria.” Cold Blooded- animals who get their heat from outside their bodies. Warm Blooded- animals who produce heat inside their bodies. Have a rich blood supply and can live in both hot and cold climates.

3 A Brief History… Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago, long before there were any people. The term “dinosaurs” originates from the Greek words deino and sauros, meaning terrible and lizard. Dinosaurs were one of several kinds of prehistoric reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era, the “Age of Reptiles.”

4 Do you know what three periods the Mesozoic Era is divided into?
Triassic Jurassic Cretaceous

6 Click on an era or period to view dinosaurs from that time…

7 Characteristics of Dinosaurs:
Dinosaurs came in all shapes and sizes. Among them were dinosaurs… As tall as buildings. Longer than tennis courts. Faster than racehorses. Armed with dagger-sharp teeth. Heavier than railroad cars. Dinosaurs are related to reptiles, such as crocodiles, lizards, snakes, and turtle. They also seem to be related to birds!

8 Incredible Dinosaurs Brachiosaurus Tyrannosaurus Rex
One of the largest known land animals who lived during the Jurassic Period. Height: feet Length: 85 feet Weight: tons Biggest meat eating dinosaur to live on land during the Cretaceous Period. Height: feet Length: 40 feet Weight: 5-7 tons

9 How Many Dinosaurs are there?
There are over 500 different species of dinosaurs that have been found, named, and scientifically accepted. Different Kinds of Dinosaurs Include: The not-so-dumb dinosaurs. The speedy dinosaurs. The armored dinosaurs. The duck-billed dinosaurs. The horned dinosaurs. Rulers of the sky. Rulers of the sea. The feathered dinosaurs.

10 The End of Dinosaurs Towards the end of the Cretaceous period three-fourths of all dinosaurs died out, some disappeared millions of years following, and by the end of the Cretaceous (65 million years ago), the dinosaurs were practically all gone. They had become extinct. There are three theories (ideas) why the dinosaurs became extinct: The cold air made it feel like winter all the time. Keeping warm and finding food was difficult. A star exploded in the sky and sent out cosmic rays. The rays killed off the dinosaurs. A blazing asteroid from outer space smashed into Earth and the explosion brought the Age of Dinosaurs to a close.

12 Do Now Find a dinosaur that interests you from the three periods we discussed. Write down at least five interesting facts or characteristics about that dinosaur. Draw a picture of your dinosaur. You may use the resources, links, and activities I provided to help you. Have Fun!
