Green Program of Study Pilot Grant Bergen County Technical Schools Progress Report: March, 2012

Recruitment & Enrollment Two-pronged approach Getting students to select grade 9 courses as part of their 9 th Grade exploratory experience (24 students selected in pilot year) All 60 9 th grade students enrolled in new integrated science class, “Science of Sustainability,” which builds interest through the exploration of topics such as: The power of tsunamis and rogue waves Wind turbine design

Hands-on Exploration Students working in groups of 3-5 to use kits to build wind turbine models Students apply formulas (i.e. Ohm’s Law) in the analysis of their turbine model Use analysis to brainstorm on ways to improve the design Developed with the guidance of Essex County Tech

Professional Development Spring 2011: Orientation Summer 2011: Week-long training Used the Yammer and Dropbox accounts to share information/resources with other grantees GEF Institute’s online Green Building coursework Building Science training from the Energy Coordinating Agency: April 3 rd -5 th

Conversations with Fairleigh Dickinson University, re: synergies with their B.S. in Construction Technology Integration of multiple industry certifications from C-Tech Associates: Energy Management Systems: Smart Home technologies, energy auditing, and home systems programming Green Technology Systems: Rules of energy; energy action planning, energy and climate
