A railway was built on the pier 1890, and in 1897 an extension to the pier head took it to 2,145 meters – a World record. The Southend Pier

It has had 4 major fires and at least 2 boats have bumped into it causing damage – this was the damaged caused in 1908. The Southend Pier The last fire was in 2005.
