Quito, Ecuador Summer 2009 In the early 1979, Quito was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in recognition of the preservation of its colonial center. Slightly over a million people live in present-day Quito. Quito has plenty to offer culturally. Movies, theater, symphonic concerts, folk music clubs, book stores, museums, art galleries, antique stores, arts and crafts stores, tourist attractions and good food abound. It is the financial, political, and administrative center of the country.

Quito, Ecuador Summer 2009 Constructed between 1535-1605 the San Francisco Church and Monastery with its 104 Doric columns is the largest structure in colonial Quito. Built on an Incan holy site this complex took 59 years to construct, it is the oldest church in South America and considered a great masterpiece of baroque art.

Calle La Ronda One of the oldest streets in the Old City. Buildings painted bright white with blue windows frames and doors and touched by pots of red geraniums. This is a reminder of a decade ago when all buildings in "Old Quito" were required to be painted a specific color.

Quito, Ecuador Summer 2009 Using a hot iron, a young artisan in Cuenca adds finishing touches to a straw hat. The hats, misleadingly known as Panama hats, are woven from the dried leaves of the palmlike jipijapa tree, which thrives in forests along Ecuador’s northwestern coast.

Otavalo Market Most famous Indian market in Ecuador. Well known for its assortment of textiles and other crafts. Saturday is main market day with an animal market taking part on the outskirts of the town.
