www.ieagreen.org.uk Use of Biomass with CCS (GHG/07/48) Use of sustainably grown biomass results in near-zero net CO 2 emissions Biomass plants with CCS would have negative net CO 2 emissions Co-combustion of a small fraction of biomass in a coal fired plant could result in zero-net CO 2 emissions IEA GHG undertook a study in 1997 on biomass power plants for GHG abatement CCS was not included in the scope This study will assess use of biomass with CCS

www.ieagreen.org.uk Use of Biomass with CCS Types of biomass By-products and residues Purpose–grown biomass Types of biomass utilisation Heat and power production Combustion, gasification and co-use with coal Liquid fuels production Bio-diesel, ethanol etc Current technologies and potential future technologies Types of capture process Post-combustion, Pre-combustion and Oxy-combustion

www.ieagreen.org.uk Outline Scope of the Study -1 Summarise the types of biomass Summarise the types of utilisation technology Combustion, gasification and liquid fuel production Discuss differences between coal and biomass plants and implications for capture processes E.g. CO 2 and impurities concentrations Identify impacts of future biomass technologies on CO 2 capture processes Compile information on biomass life cycle emissions Assess how much biomass would need to be co-fired to achieve zero net CO 2 emissions
4
www.ieagreen.org.uk Outline Scope of the Study - 2 Detailed assessment of about 4 selected cases Cases to be selected during the study Could include the following plants with CCS: A large ‘zero GHG emission’ co-combustion plant A large plant using purpose grown biomass A small CHP plant using by-products or residues A liquid fuels production plant Estimate energy consumptions and costs of CCS Sensitivities to biomass price, plant size etc.
