1 3.2 Converting Measurements
Chapter 3 - Length Area and Volume

2 Outcomes Analyze the relationships between:
the base units of the metric system of measurement and the base ten number system the prefixes used in the metric system and powers of ten the related units for length, area, volume, capacity, mass, and temperature for each of the two systems of measurement Develop (using proportional reasoning), generalize, explain, and apply strategies (including formulas) to convert measurements from: SI to Imperial units (e.g., Celsius to Fahrenheit, centimetres to inches, kilograms to pounds, litres to quarts) Imperial to SI units (e.g., Fahrenheit to Celsius, inches to centimetres, pounds to kilograms, quarts to litres).

3 Metric Staircase The metric stair case can be used to easily convert between metric measurements Every step on the staircase is __________________________ different from the step before As you go __________ the staircase your decimal moves to the _______________ As you go _______________ the staircase your decimal moves to the ___________________

4 Example 1 Convert the following 43.98 m to cm 8.89 kg to mg
494,100 mg to g 7.75 km to cm

5 Example 2 Giselle would like to replace the carpet in her living room. She used her imperial tape measure to measure the room, and the dimensions were 12’ by 15’. When she went to the carpet store, she found the price of the carpet was $24.99/m2. She cannot order less then a full square metre of carpet. How much carpet should she order and how much will it cost?

6 Example 3 Samir is the cost estimator for a landscape company. He has to calculate the amount of material needed to construct a circular outdoor patio built from paving stones. The diameter of the patio is 13m. One bundle od paving stones covers 116ft2. Samir has ordered 11 bundles of paving stones. Did he order enough?
