What is Contemporary Dance? Contemporary dance can be described as a mix between various styles of dance. It combines the technical elements of jazz and ballet with the fluidity and expression of modern dance.

History Contemporary dance has roots in both ballet and modern dance, but was not seen as a separate style until after the 1950 ’ s. Contemporary dance is difficult to define because it is constantly changing.

Technique Balance, moving in and out of the floor, fall and recovery, contraction and release, and improvisation are some of the key techniques found in contemporary dance. This style of dance is often studied among trained dancers.

Popularity Contemporary dance is rapidly growing in popularity due to media exposure. Television shows such as “ So You Think You Can Dance ” and “ Dance Moms ” have sparked interest for the style of contemporary.

Choreographers Famous contemporary choreographers that have mad an impact in recent years include artists such as Mia Michaels, Travis Wall, and Sonya Tayeh.

Themes Contemporary can be used to tell a story or communicate a message. It may also have abstract themes.
