Background and motivation to create an Academic Success Workshop 10% of the College of Business students are on academic sanction Advising Sanction students took over an hour and 15 minutes 90% of the advising session was spent on going over academic resources available on campus Wanted students to take their status seriously and hold them accountable for their academic career, yet helping them see the benefit of the OAW, as an opportunity to learn, not a mandated or punitive measure

Background and motivation to create an Academic Success Workshop Concerns regarding retention Subscribed to NACADA listserv regarding advising probation students and followed helpful recommendations Pursued help from the experts at NMSU

Results: Workshop Completion Emails were sent to 63 students in Nov. 2013, 80 students in Feb 2014, and 90 students in Sept. 2014, notifying them that they are required to take the workshop and holds were placed on their record. Students completed the workshop (beginning Nov. 2013) 19 back in good standing after 1 semester (3 submitted an Adjusted Credit Option) 3 students were suspended 2 changed their major and/or campus to DACC 5 are no longer attending NMSU 18 are pending spring 15 grades

Note: The long term average for COB students on sanction and returning to good standing after one semester is 32%. Students who completed the workshop have a higher recovery rate of 40%.

Results: Workshop Completion What happened to the 186 students that have not responded? There were many different explanations: UAR holds on account Transferred to other colleges at NMSU Didn’t like college/classes Moved out of state Employment obligations Withdrew for personal reasons - illness or family issues are the main reasons

Activity, Defining Academic Standing activity, Making a To-Do List Activity, and Strategies for Staying in Good Academic Standing Online Interview
