3 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION 1 in 4 girls is sexually abused before the age of 18 1 in 6 boys is sexually abused before the age of 18 30-40% of victims are abused by a family member 50% are abused by someone outside of the family whom they know and trust STATISTICS

4 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Approximately 40% are abused by older or larger children whom they know The average age for reported abuse is 9 years old Over 30% of victims never disclose the experience to ANYONE STATISTICS

5 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Fabricated sexual abuse reports constitute only 1% to 4% of all reported cases. Of these reports, 75% are falsely reported by adults and 25% are reported by children. Children only fabricate ½% of the time Nearly 70% of child sex offenders have between 1 and 9 victims. STATISTICS

7 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION HARASSMENT POLICY The Navy League of Canada is committed to providing a learning and working environment for all persons that is free of harassment. It requires employees, officers, cadets, parents, volunteers and all other visitors to conduct themselves in a manner which promotes and protects the best interests and well being of cadets, staff and volunteers

8 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION An employee, volunteer or cadet who subjects a cadet, staff member, parent, volunteer or other member of the public to discrimination or harassment in any form may be subject to disciplinary action as is deemed to be appropriate, including dismissal from the employment or expulsion from the Navy League of Canada HARASSMENT POLICY

10 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION PERSONAL HARASSMENT Personal Harassment is any unwelcome behavior that demeans, humiliates or embarrasses a person, and that a reasonable person should have known would be unwelcome. It involves actions, comments or displays involving any of the following:

11 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Comments, jokes or slurs related to a person’s body, attire, age, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation or, disability Written or verbal abuse or threats Derogatory or demeaning posters, pictures, cartoons, graffiti or drawings Innuendoes, ostracizing, taunting or intimidating Vandalism of personal property Practical jokes which result in embarrassment or insult or; Abuse or authority which undermines performance or threatens career

12 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION DISCRIMINATION An act or unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice. According to Federal Law, a person or persons may not be discriminated against based on the following:

13 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Race National or ethnic origin Color Religion Age Sex (including pregnancy and children) Marital Status Family status Pardoned conviction Physical or Mental Disability (including drug and alcohol dependence) Sexual orientation

14 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION SEXUAL HARASSMENT Any unwelcome conduct, gestures or invitation of a sexual nature that are likely to cause offence or humiliation. Sexual harassment can include the following:

15 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Unwanted physical contacts such as touching, patting, pinching or, hugging Unwelcome sexual remarks, invitations or requests (including persistent unwanted contact after the end of a consensual relationship) Derogatory or degrading remarks directed towards members of one sex or sexual orientation Unwelcome inquiries or comments about a person’s sex life

16 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Leering, whistling, innuendoes, jokes or other behaviors or gestures of a sexual nature Display of pornographic, sexist, racist or other offensive or derogatory material Verbal abuse or threats of a sexual nature; or Physical or sexual assault

18 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION EMOTIONAL ABUSE Emotional abuse is a chronic attack of a Child’s/youth’s self esteem and includes the following: Name callingThreatening Ridiculing Berating Intimidating Isolating HazingIgnoring a child’s/youth’s needs

19 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION PHYSICAL ABUSE Physical Abuse occurs when a person in a position of power or trust injures or threatens to injure a child or youth and includes the following:

21 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION NEGLECT Neglect is the chronic inattention to the basic necessities of life such as: Clothing Shelter Nutritious dietEducation Good hygiene Supervision Medical and dental care Exercise Adequate rest Safe environment Fresh airMoral guidance and discipline

22 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION SEXUAL ABUSE Sexual abuse occurs when a young or less powerful person is used by an older or more powerful child, adolescent or adult for sexual gratification. Sexual abuse is broken down into two categories: Contact and Non-Contact.

23 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION SEXUAL ABUSE (CONTACT) Kissing Holding a child in a sexual nature Touching sexual body parts or forcing a child to touch another person’s sexual body parts Oral sex Penetrating a child (anally or vaginally) with objects or fingers Having vaginal or anal intercourse with a child

24 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION SEXUAL ABUSE (NON-CONTACT) Flashing or exposing sexual body parts to a child Watching intrusively as a child changes or showers Speaking/communicating seductively with a child Showing pornographic films, magazines or photographs to children

25 VANCOUVER ISLAND DIVISION Having young people participate in the creation of pornographic materials Forcing a young person to watch a sexual act performed by others Objectifying, ridiculing a child’s sexual body parts SEXUAL ABUSE (NON-CONTACT)
