1 Repetitive Strain Injury A PROGRAMMER’S WORST ENEMY

2 Overview - Repetitive Strain Injury (R.S.I.) - Musculoskeletal and Nervous systems - Repetitive tasks, over exertion, vibrations, awkward positions, etc.

3 History - De Morbis Artificum Diatriba (1700 A.D.) - Bernardino Ramazzini, Father of Occupational Medicene - James Paget, Carpal Tunnel (1854 A.D.)

4 Causes - Sitting and bad posture - Spinal Tearing - Constant and repetitive movement - Mental strongholds - Cold temperatures - Prolonged work periods, sans break - Fatigue

5 Symptoms/Effects - Tender joints - Pain in affected areas - Pulsating sensation - Tingling - Loss of sensation/strength

6 Types of R.S.I. - Type one and type two (Diffuse R.S.I.) - First type is categorized by specific symptoms - Type two is categorized by non-specific symptoms - X-rays and blood tests (T-two) - Extreme sensitivity

7 Work Pressure - Employers put stress on employees to work - Deadlines require too much from employees - All work and no breaks - Kentucky requires 30 min. meal break and two 10 min. rest breaks (8 Hours)

8 Treatment - Permanent damage is permanent - Cut back on hurtful routines/habits - Medication - Surgery - Physiotherapy and regular exercise - Cold/Hot packs -Deal with it before it’s an issue
